Wan Chai’s newly opened Meiji-style izakaya, blending local cuisine to showcase the authentic flavors from various regions of Japan!

Maison Meiji

A new store has opened in the century-old pre-war building at 7 Mau Lo Street! After undergoing revitalization and conservation, this place saw the arrival of many restaurants and shops last year. The most popular spot for taking photos is Maison Meiji, a restaurant bar and café in the Meiji style! Designed in a mix of Japanese and Western styles within the historic building, it features elements such as marble tables, dark green ceramic tiles, black and white with red mosaic floor tiles, and vintage mirrors, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a Japanese mansion from another era.

Maison Meiji also has a hidden space that has not been publicly disclosed. It has been transformed into an izakaya that has just started its trial operation. The long-shaped izakaya bar can only accommodate 10-12 people, creating a discreet and friendly atmosphere with a Japanese izakaya vibe. The executive chef of the izakaya, Tatsuo Haruta, has been in Hong Kong for 20 years, familiar with the local culture while insisting on preserving the essence of Japanese cuisine. He brings traditional home-cooked dishes that are fused with local cooking techniques to the restaurant.

The menu here is carefully selected, with over twenty dishes to choose from. In addition to common izakaya food like grilled eel skewers, handmade chicken meatballs, and grilled chicken hearts, there are also rustic dishes with local flavors. The “Scallop Miso Cooked Egg” ($198) uses scallops from Aomori Prefecture, with miso, green onions, and raw egg added to the shell. It is heated and served at the table, creating a delicious and fragrant dish.

There are many choices for seafood lovers, and “Gillette Premium Abalone” ($128) is one of them. The control of oil temperature is crucial, ensuring that the abalone is fried to 80% cooked, with a crispy texture and tender meat.

Other recommended dishes include Ma You Yi Ye Gan, Song Ye Crab Shell Roast, Yuzu Pepper Wine Cooked Clams, etc. In addition, the pickled snacks are also worth a try. All of them, such as Qiao Tou, Chuan Qie, Bitter Gourd, and Burdock, are pickled in-house and are the best snacks to accompany drinks. After eating, don’t forget to order a beautifully designed dessert to end this sweet Meiji night.

During the new opening period, the izakaya offers a discount. From now until April 15th, customers can enjoy an 15% off.
