The New Year’s cakes can be made in bright colors! May Chow, the founder of Little Bao and the winner of the 2017 Best Female Chef in Asia, has designed a new New Year’s cake called “Golden Pumpkin Cake” ($298/box) this year. The golden color comes from local bottle gourd pumpkin and salted egg yolk butter. When cut open, you can see large grains of salted egg yolk. Not only is the color eye-catching, but it also has a natural sweet and creamy flavor with a hint of nuttiness. It is mixed with Japanese dried scallops, shiitake mushrooms, and Hong Kong’s famous San Hing Lung preserved meats and waxed meats, creating a perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors.
“Daikon Radish Cake” ($278/box) is also a new addition this year. The daikon radish is cooked with yuzu peel, giving it a special fragrance. It is also made with San Hing Lung preserved meat and waxed meat, Japanese dried scallops, shiitake mushrooms, Thai sun-dried shrimp, agave nectar, and sea salt, creating a rich and layered flavor.
Last year’s “Big Red Carrot Cake” ($268/box) and “Big Purple Sweet Potato Cake” ($278/box) are back this year. The red color of the carrot cake comes from beets, while the color of the sweet potato cake comes from Okinawan purple sweet potatoes and taro. The vibrant natural colors bring even more joy to the festive table.
From January 10th, Little Bao will be introducing limited edition Lunar New Year dishes. One of their most popular desserts, the Deep-Fried Ice Cream Bao, now comes in a new flavor: “Sake Ice Cream with Ginger Red Lees Syrup” ($48). The crispy bun is filled with fragrant sake ice cream and topped with a syrup that has a festive color and a unique red lees flavor.
The salty flavor bag has a “Red Rice Fermented Chicken Bag” ($98), with slow-cooked tender chicken breast and pickled cabbage, bringing a refreshing taste. There is also the “Typhoon Shelter Crispy Cucumber” ($68) with a spicy and fragrant flavor, making it interesting and surprising to eat during the Lunar New Year!
