The term “inheritance” represents two types of people, two meanings: that is, passing on all or what one has learned in a lifetime from the previous generation and being continued by the next generation, and there are many different ways of inheritance, including knowledge, skills, doctrines, or traditional customs and activities. For example, in the book “Hong Kong Artisans,” it records 25 Hong Kong artisans, divided into five parts: “Hong Kong Sacrifice,” “Hong Kong Opening,” “Hong Kong Taste,” “Hong Kong Maintenance,” and “Hong Kong Film,” to share the stories of old masters and factories, descendants who update their skills with the times, or forgotten old-school artisans striving to survive in the city, and the spirit of Hong Kong.
Recently, there have also been exhibitions or activities related to heritage, allowing everyone to personally experience the necessity of inheritance.

Second “Luban Festival” limited-time exhibition during the exhibition
“Lu Ban”, a famous ancient Chinese architect, carpenter, and inventor, is highly respected in the world. “Lu Ban Festival” is themed around “Lu Ban’s spirit, inheritance, and innovation,” symbolizing unity in the construction industry and joy with the people.
“Luban Festival” is held at the “Master’s Birthday” (the birthday of Luban Master on the 13th day of the sixth month of the lunar calendar) at the Kwun Tong waterfront, featuring a series of activities such as the “Luban Festival 2024 Exhibition,” guided tours, workshops, and the “Luban Master’s Birthday Banquet” to celebrate.
The “Lu Ban Festival 2024 Exhibition”, which took the lead in kicking off the event, showcased three major theme installations based on the concept of promoting the “Three Crafts” of woodworking, painting, and plastering: a giant Lu Ban lock “woodworking” art installation adorned with Lu Ban lock decorations, a seven-color “paint” check-in installation with bright and eye-catching colors, and a stylish “plaster” theme installation that exudes a modern feel.
In addition, the conference specially invited Hong Kong woodworking craftsmen, the father and son duo Tom and Terry Yip, to use multiple sets of Lu Ban locks instead of iron nails for construction and load-bearing, combining artistic creation with traditional mortise and tenon techniques. They designed a giant Lu Ban lock art installation over 7 and a half feet tall, showcasing in the public space in front of the exhibition hall, allowing the public to witness how skilled craftsmanship spanning over a thousand years transforms into fashionable art. The “Lu Ban Festival” also includes four “Mortise and Tenon Wood Stool Workshops” for the public to experience for free, with the Yip father and son serving as instructors, teaching basic woodworking skills on the spot. Participants can gain a deeper understanding of the “mortise and tenon” structure and woodworking production process, experience the ingenuity of Lu Ban’s craftsmanship, and be inspired to unleash their creativity.
There are still many guided tours, workshops, elections, and activities led by instructors to guide the public to visit this Grade I historic building, savor its unique architectural style, personally taste the secret technique of quickly dismantling the Luban lock, deepen the understanding of Luban’s history and spirit among different age groups in society, commend outstanding colleagues who have made significant contributions, and discover new talents in the construction industry.

“East Meets West · Hong Kong Heritage Exhibition”
The brand new art exhibition “East Meets West · Hong Kong Heritage Exhibition” officially opened recently, with AIA and the local creative art platform ZtoryTeller joining hands to present 16 different exhibits with the concept of “heritage” and celebrating the journey of life as the theme.
This interesting exhibition is composed of multimedia installation art and mural artworks created by local and international artists, including Louise Hill, Eleanor McColl, Vivian Ho, and Gianluca Crudele. They bring their rich and diverse cultural backgrounds to provide depth and meaning to their wonderful works, not only depicting how Eastern traditions blend with Western culture, celebrating the diversity of Hong Kong’s heritage and culture, but also hoping to inspire guests to explore the meaning of heritage.
One of the large mural works created by artist Ho Bo-hin, “Stories of Legacy,” depicts five individuals specially interviewed for this purpose, such as independent musician Serrini, North River Hotel chef and social enterprise founder “Sham Shui Po Ming Gor,” professional baseball coach and esports player Philipe, same-sex partners Charlz and Clement, and a mother and healthcare worker Ah Chi, to share their views and understanding of “legacy.”
