CHAT Mill 6 (Mill 6 Textile Culture and Art Museum) brings you the latest “She Can Bring Me the Sun in the Night – Dedicated to Pan Di Hua” 2023 Summer Exhibition, dedicated to this influential cross-cultural artist in the music industry, performing arts, and art world. This exhibition is closely communicated and co-curated by the curatorial team and Pan Di Hua (Sister Pan), exploring every important stage symbolizing Sister Pan’s life and career through photographs, costumes, records, news clippings, documents, and personal belongings. It also showcases newly commissioned contemporary artworks, reshaping the style of Sister Pan, a generation of stars, with a modern perspective.

Upon entering the Nanfeng Textile Factory, visitors will first be greeted by a large suspended lattice portrait installation, where they can catch a glimpse of Sister Pan’s various stages of being captured on camera, observing her transformation from a graceful young girl to an unflappable star, and then transitioning from a performer who dominated the stage to a producer of original musicals. As they ascend to the second floor, visitors to the CHAT Factory exhibition space can also appreciate the portrait photographs taken during Sister Pan’s career peak, starting from the golden age of the 1960s, as well as the groundbreaking work “White Lady” – planned by Sister Pan in 1972, regarded as Hong Kong’s first local Mandarin musical, and also marking the first collaboration between renowned masters Joseph Koo and James Wong in creating the music and lyrics for the production.

Through communication with Sister Pan, the curator specially showcased a series of her activities to depict the role she played in the entertainment and travel culture at that time. This includes her performances in Bangkok, Tel Aviv, Phnom Penh, Singapore, Colombo, Beirut, Rotterdam, Honolulu, Taipei, and West Berlin, as well as her attendance at multiple international performance events organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Development Association (predecessor of the Hong Kong Tourism Board) to promote Hong Kong overseas.

This exhibition goes beyond the intention of retrospection, and through the intervention and interpretation of contemporary art, it organizes and injects vitality into the numerous files of Sister Pan’s life. In addition, unreleased video clips of Sister Pan will be featured throughout the exhibition, filmed over the years by her close friend and junior, Chen Songqi. Through these close-ups, it vividly showcases the multifaceted aspects of this shining star’s career and life.

“She can give me the sun in the dark night – dedicated to Pandy Wah.” This unique exhibition not only revisits Sister Pan’s brilliant performing career spanning three generations, but also showcases her multifaceted and cross-boundary qualities – full of creativity, frankness, occasional hesitation, but always leading us forward. As early as the late 1950s, Sister Pan had already promoted Hong Kong’s music culture to the international stage. She had a significant international influence in the early music and entertainment industry and was the first singer to adopt the “Chinese melody with Western lyrics.”

Pandora has provided great support and encouragement to the CHAT Factory 6 curatorial team and artists during the exhibition planning process, and she always remembers to engage in dialogue with the new generation: “I have a special affinity with young people in their 30s. I always meet them during their prime years. The curatorial team and the audience at CHAT Factory 6 are mostly young people. I hope you don’t have any biases and think that older people are antiquated or outdated, and that there are generation gaps between older and younger people in many aspects. Ancient music, literature, drama, and art are all beautiful cultural forms of education and cultivation, but they are difficult to learn. However, we can draw inspiration from them and provide everyone with opportunities for innovation.”
