Want to invite your friends or besties to enjoy afternoon tea together and take photos for social media? In addition to choosing from afternoon teas collaborated with major beauty brands, or opting for exquisite desserts with a Korean or vegetarian twist, why not experience some Hong Kong-style flavors as well? The café at the Hyatt Regency Hong Kong Tsim Sha Tsui has recently collaborated with Yuet Tung China Works to introduce a summer-exclusive “Hong Kong-style Midsummer Afternoon Tea.” Served on exquisite Hong Kong-style porcelain tableware, could this become the next must-visit spot for foodies?
“Hong Kong-style Midsummer Afternoon Tea” combines classic Hong Kong-style nostalgic desserts with a variety of fresh fruits, offering a series of sweets such as Hong Kong-style milk tea scones with strawberry jam, Hong Kong-style mango egg tarts, and more. In addition, there are fruit desserts like grape Napoleon, watermelon strawberry cake, as well as soft and sweet treats like vanilla almond milk custard cake.
There are also many nostalgic Hong Kong-style authentic snacks in terms of savory items, such as the crispy Hong Kong-style sesame shrimp toast, the small and layered honey ham mini pineapple bun, and the butter soft toast with condensed milk. Both in terms of appearance and taste, they are full of classic flavors!
At the end of afternoon tea, the restaurant will also present a surprise dessert – half-cooked melon with gold leaf vanilla soft serve ice cream, pairing the sweet and juicy melon with smooth ice cream, and topped with gold leaf. Finally, enjoy nostalgic red bean ice, iced milk tea, and other frozen Hong Kong-style specialty drinks to bring a refreshing taste of summer!
In addition to a variety of delicious pastries, even the series of tableware used for afternoon tea is filled with Hong Kong sentiment. These exquisite tableware made of white porcelain are specially tailored in collaboration with a coffee shop and a hand-painted porcelain factory in Guangdong. The Guangdong porcelain factory hand-paints delicate “Hong Kong-style patterns” of classical fruits, flowers, butterflies, and birds on a series of afternoon tea tableware, expressing nostalgia through color and brushstrokes.
Established in 1928, the Canton East Porcelain Factory was once the largest hand-painted porcelain factory in the region, and is now the only one remaining in Hong Kong. The unique “Guangcai” technique originated from Guangzhou, later incorporating Western cultural influences, gradually evolving into “Hong Kong colors”. As for the production of “Hong Kong colors porcelain”, the masters of the Canton East Porcelain Factory paint patterns on white porcelain using overglaze enamels, which are then fired at high temperatures.
The production of Hong Kong-style porcelain is very particular, from composition, coloring to stamping, but Hong Kong-style porcelain has gradually declined in recent years, and the precious century-old craftsmanship is gradually being lost. Therefore, when enjoying afternoon tea and taking photos for social media, you may also want to carefully appreciate these porcelain tableware that represent the precious local art and culture.
