By collaborating with Master Lu Ming, a master craftsman of bamboo steamer baskets, and contemporary artisan Lin Jiayu, this Buddha statue “Blessings” is created in the form of bamboo weaving and bamboo carving, symbolizing blessings, happiness, and peace. Master Lu Ming, who is 94 years old this year, and his apprentice worked together to create large, medium, and small bamboo steamer baskets as the base of the Buddha statue. The details such as stone steps, handrails, and railings are made from different bamboo materials by Lin Jiayu. The artwork is complemented by traditional bamboo root carving techniques, where the Buddha’s head, hands, and feet are carved on bamboo roots, and then purple bamboo is shaved into bamboo strips to make the robe on the Buddha’s body, creating a complete Buddha statue.
This is a pair of mixed media sculptures titled “Smooth Sailing” created by master craftsmen Fu Tongshi, Liao Rongxiang, and contemporary artisans Lin Kunyou and Lin Fansheng. Master Liao used fallen leaves from the riverbank as wax molds to showcase the texture and form of the leaves, and created two sets of “sail leaves” using lost wax casting with colored glass and brass. Lin Kunyou and Lin Fansheng collaborated to respond to these “sail leaves” by crafting the boat body through woodworking and sculpture.
This work “Wandering – Time, Place, People” is a collaboration between contemporary craftsman Li Runshi and Chen Yu. It is a rattan suitcase made with a blue dye lining. The frame of the rattan suitcase is made of wooden strips, while the surface and handle are woven with rattan. The lining and compartments of the suitcase are made of fabric, with patterns created using the traditional block printing technique, inspired by the iconic paper stone pattern found in historic buildings in Hong Kong.
This is “Bozi Chess,” a collaboration between contemporary craftsmen KC and PAK, which reinterprets the traditional Chinese chess game with contemporary craftsmanship. The artwork compresses the design of the classic traditional chessboard, and the modern version of the chessboard elegantly integrates clean lines and beautiful geometric patterns, showcasing minimalist aesthetics.
The exhibition also showcased a collaborative work titled “The Amazing Adventures of Sparrows: Hong Kong Edition,” created by master craftsman Zhang Chengzhong, illustrator Zhang Kaixin, and photographer Chen Shushi. These three artists from different fields presented the delicate craftsmanship of sparrows through aesthetics, combining elements of carving, illustration, and photography to explore the versatility of traditional sparrow craftsmanship.
