Artist Yang Pei-heng presents “Hong Kong in Venice” as the peripheral exhibition of the 60th Venice Biennale officially kicks off!

M+ Museum and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) recently held the opening ceremony for the peripheral exhibition of the 60th Venice Biennale – “Yang Pei Hang: Double Hospital, Hong Kong in Venice“.

This new site-specific exhibition is the peripheral exhibition of the Venice Biennale, the most important international platform for contemporary art globally. This exhibition marks the sixth collaboration between M+ and the Arts Development Council, having previously held solo exhibitions for Hong Kong artists Lee Kit, Tsang Kin-Wah, Samson Young, Shirley Tse, and Samson Young at the Biennale. Each exhibition has garnered praise from international audiences, expanding the artists’ artistic horizons and becoming one of the major events in the international art scene!

The solo exhibition of Hong Kong artist **Yang Pei-hang** was curated by M+ visual arts assistant curator **Zhou Wan-yun** and exhibited to the public in Venice. The artist explores the relationship between humans and aquatic ecosystems through personal experiences and keen observations, using the concept of “attachment” to explore emotions, desires, and power dynamics as the theme of the exhibition.

“Attachment” not only represents the longing for a particular person, but also embodies the emotional connection between people and objects.

His work draws inspiration from his father’s seafood restaurant, aquarium shop, feng shui decorations, and the few small fish he raised in his childhood. In Yang Peikang’s fishless fish tank landscapes, desires, cravings, and power are laid bare. Through the concepts of absence and attachment, his works deeply reflect on the social system that constructs our lives, subtly alluding to the current climate crisis, and inviting viewers to contemplate the unique emotional detachment and power dynamics in contemporary society.
