This Japanese restaurant located in Kennedy Town is named “Junin Toge”. The word “Toge” (pronounced as “ka”) means “mountain peak”, so its entrance design resembles a cave, and being situated on the ground floor of a new commercial building, the location is discreet, adding to the surprise and anticipation!
Entering the cave entrance is like passing through a tunnel of time and space to arrive in Japan! The murals in the tunnel and inside the restaurant are created by local artist and illustrator Kristopher Ho, with the theme of “guardians” featuring bears, wolves, pheasants’ eyes, and snowy mountain landscapes, showcasing the history and culture of the indigenous people of Hokkaido, adding vitality and stylish elements to the restaurant’s dark and upscale layout.
The food at this restaurant leans towards high-end and Western-style izakaya, with a chef with over 25 years of experience in charge. Even just the appetizers are very delicate. The “Slow-cooked Foie Gras Cheese” feels like a fine dining Western dish, while the “Red Wine Cheese Risotto” is appetizing and rich in flavor, and the “Sakura Shrimp Cheese Pancake” is crispy and full of freshness.
During the restaurant’s grand opening period, they are offering a special promotion of $88 for four glasses of sake, allowing everyone to try different flavors of sake at an affordable price, perfect for pairing with a variety of snacks!
The recommended dish is “White Grilled Eel”, the eel is rich in flavor, and there are also high-quality grilled items such as grilled Wagyu beef ribs, salt-grilled Japanese local chicken, premium beef tongue skewers, and homemade ground chicken skewers.
The menu includes sashimi, kamameshi, desserts, and more, with a wide variety of options. Outside the door, there is a retail area with Japanese products such as cheesecakes and groceries, allowing you to bring the taste of Japan home!
