The retrospective exhibition of Chu Teh-Chun (1920-2014) “Nebula” will be held from April 20 to June 30 this year, concurrently with the 60th Venice International Art Biennale. The exhibition will take place on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, opposite St. Mark’s Square in Venice, curated by art historian Matthieu Poirier, making it the most significant exhibition dedicated to the Chinese-French painter Chu Teh-Chun in recent years.
This exhibition will guide visitors through many precious oil paintings, such as large-scale works borrowed from the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, allowing them to appreciate about 50 iconic paintings created by Chu Teh-Chun since 1955. Chu Teh-Chun permanently settled in Paris in that year, getting closer to Western avant-garde art. A new monograph on Chu Teh-Chun, written by the curator and art historian Matthieu Poirier, will be published by the renowned French publisher Editions Gallimard at the same time as this exhibition.
The exhibition will present Zhu Dequn’s oil paintings in reverse chronological order, from late large-scale works to early small-scale works. The scene is designed in 360°, showcasing the works on three architectural levels in the same space. The unique multi-level structure of the exhibition hall can perfectly present the painter’s dynamic nebula imagery and resonate with it. Another motivation for the unique layout of the exhibition hall is to change our previous appreciation of Zhu Dequn’s works. The perspectives of art critics or institutions have long focused on the painter’s recognition of the East-West duality, which still holds significance today. However, this should not hinder everyone from understanding his aesthetic perspective, resonating with it historically, and even finding its artistic origins in the most contemporary creations.
