Following its expansion into Singapore earlier this year, WOAW Gallery recently welcomed a new gallery space in the Wan Chai Sun Street community. The gallery also presented the dual exhibition “The Record, the Double, and the Singular” featuring Korean artist Taedong Lee and local artist Kitty Ng, marking the beginning of the new gallery.
The exhibition is held jointly by WOAW Gallery, located at 3 Sun Street, Wan Chai, and another gallery at 5 Sun Street. Artists Taedong Lee and Kitty Ng engage in a deep dialogue of art through the two spaces. Their artworks are based on personal photo archives, where they view photos as catalysts for memories and inherent uniqueness in the process of distortion. They transform and depict the images on canvas by fantasizing, deleting, adding, and modifying the original memories associated with the photos.
Taedong Lee’s works are themed around memories and emotions related to landscapes. He uses impasto or thin layers of paint to depict distorted images, transforming classic natural scenes into nostalgic compositions. The forests, rivers, and skies blend together in an impressionistic manner. Imagining different times and spaces is the core of his creation. The figures in his photographs include his parents, siblings, and himself, appearing in new forms within vibrant new settings.

His work “An Exceptionally Bright Night” depicts an artist riding a horse with his parents, surrounded by lush blue and green swirls. “Escaping” and “Escaped” seem to be contrasting images of the same scene, with the former having a darker color palette that evokes a sense of mourning, while the latter appears to be immersed in a reluctant joy.
Another artist, Kitty Ng, draws inspiration from her own and her family’s images, focusing on the interactions between people, relationships with oneself and loved ones, and cultural identity. Her works are based on photographs taken during her university years, depicting the intimate relationships of friendship and family in everyday life, with every brushstroke on the canvas filled with longing.
The artist’s studio originally started with collages made from photographs and design software Adobe Photoshop. In works such as “Forward We Go!” and “S to S,” she combines the memories and joyful moments of close friends and family, creating charming and captivating compositions that are filled with traces of life.
