“Weaving” is not only an art, but also plays different roles in history. A thread not only connects people’s daily lives, but also used to serve military purposes in the past. The current multimedia art experience “Who Weaves and Who Wears” at the Nam Fung Textile Factory in Tsuen Wan explores the culture of weaving through the works of media artist Qu Yuanche.
“The question of who weavers are and who dressers are” is the opening event of the “15th Campus Art Ambassador Program” – “Youth Art Week” organized by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (ADC). With the theme of “cross-media art”, it allows campus art ambassadors and the general public to participate together.
The art experience works exhibited in this exhibition are themed around “weaving”. In addition to being a daily activity, “weaving” has also been used as a tool for propaganda and support for frontline soldiers during wars. Spies even used unique needlework sequences to communicate messages to their comrades during wartime.

Artist Qu Yuanche’s works construct a atmosphere of alternation between the old and the new within the Nanfeng Textile Factory, presenting alternative weaving stories through cross-media art, revisiting the important moments of weaving techniques in history, and exploring the connection between knitting and the military. Visitors only need to scan the QR code of the interactive device to experience diverse art creations from a novel perspective.
In addition to cross-media art works, there will also be a series of art experiential activities in August, including the “Weaving Workshop” guided by Qu Yuanche, where participants will weave messages, the “Urban Sketching Workshop” where participants will explore the former textile industry center in Tsuen Wan through observation and sketching, and the “Artist Guided Tour” to understand the inspiration behind the artworks and gain a deeper understanding of the various aspects of “weaving”.
