Huang Jinxi and Zhou Junhui’s joint exhibition marks nearly twenty years of friendship! The interweaving of classic suburban and urban scenes forms a complete image of Hong Kong.

The meeting of two renowned Hong Kong artists, Wong Chun Hei and Chow Chun Fai, brings together one who excels in landscape writing and one who enjoys painting urban scenes, creating a complete image of Hong Kong. Recently, the Contemporary Tang Art Center has presented a dual exhibition of these two artists titled “Floating Mountains and Mirage Cities Sparkling with Stars.” The exhibition explores the theme of “light,” penetrating through time, culture, and history, and examining the impact of light on the urban and rural landscapes of Hong Kong. The exhibition will showcase the latest works of Chow Chun Fai and Wong Chun Hei, reflecting their different artistic styles and imaginations.

Wong Chun Hei excels in landscape painting, with a recent focus on daytime scenes in Hong Kong. With paint and brush in hand, he ventures into nature to capture the colors and beauty of the day from a unique perspective. His works are not only filled with bright and vibrant colors, but also storytelling, with each painting brimming with details and imagination. In this exhibition series, Wong Chun Hei will shine the spotlight on the outskirts of the city, specifically on Fo Tan, depicting its scenery under the sunlight. Through his distinctive painting techniques and use of colors, he aims to present the natural light and beauty of the suburban area, showcasing the vitality and elegance of nature during the day.

Zhou Junhui’s works mainly revolve around Hong Kong’s nightlife, exploring the vibrancy of the city and its changing lights and shadows. He is skilled at finding inspiration from old photos and movies, depicting city scenes captured in the photos and capturing the artificial neon lights in the city at night. His works have a strong sense of time and urban atmosphere, and his unique narrative technique contains reflections and memories of the city. With rich layers of pigments and dreamy colors, he reinterprets the brilliance and lights and shadows of Hong Kong’s night scenes.

The landscapes of the city and the suburbs are also another important theme of the exhibition. The two artists live in Fo Tan, Hong Kong, and have a unique significance for this area. For Wong Chun Hei, it is a place where he has lived for over ten years but has never truly depicted. By capturing the light and shadow during the day in Fo Tan, Wong Chun Hei allows viewers to feel the beauty of the fusion between the city and the suburbs, as well as the subtle emotions behind this fusion. On the other hand, Chow Chun Fai’s works draw inspiration from the night scenes of the city, depicting the charm created by the artificial lights and neon lights of Hong Kong at night. By juxtaposing the works of the two artists, viewers can experience the light and shadow of Hong Kong at different times and listen closely to the dialogue between the city and nature.

This exhibition documents the long-standing friendship and ongoing artistic exchange between Wong Chun Hei and Chow Chun Fai. It showcases their exploration and contemplation of the theme of “light,” making it a must-visit exhibition this month!
