In the 17th century, Italian artworks were characterized by dramatic lighting, exaggerated movements, and facial expressions to create tension, emphasizing strong and realistic emotional expressions, later referred to by historians as “Baroque art.” Artists of that time were like the pioneers of immersive experiences, with their paintings captivating viewers and making them feel as if they were inside the artwork.

Hong Kong Art Museum presents “The Road to the Baroque: Masterpieces from the Capodimonte Museum” this month, focusing on 40 Italian treasures from the Capodimonte Museum. These collections are being exhibited in Hong Kong for the first time, including works by art masters from the 16th to 17th centuries such as Titian, Annibale Carracci, and Artemisia Gentileschi.

To complement this exhibition, Professor Patrick Poon, Associate Vice President (Interdisciplinary Research) and Founding Dean of the School of Creativity at Hong Kong Baptist University, has designed Baroque music and soundscapes for these works, adding an auditory element to the art appreciation experience and guiding the audience into the world of Baroque art.

The gallery also invited local artists Ng Siu Keng and Chow Chun Fai to respond to the works of the Baroque masters using different media, as well as Missquai’s illustrated book, injecting a Hong Kong perspective into the exhibition, allowing the audience to enjoy an artistic experience that travels between the past and present.

This batch of works will be on display until early November, so art enthusiasts remember to seize this rare opportunity to come and visit!
