「工筆新傳—傳統藝術在香港的當代探索」水墨作品選萃

When it comes to ink wash painting, do you first think of those works with traditional themes of landscapes, flowers, birds, insects, and fish? Although ink wash painting is a visual art form with a thousand years of culture in China, many artists today incorporate Western artistic techniques into their practice of ink wash painting, developing a new style of ink wash painting.

Recently, Wheelock Properties has brought “New Gongbi Tradition – Contemporary Exploration of Traditional Art in Hong Kong” a selection of ink works, featuring the brilliant masterpieces of 9 local ink art elites including Stone Ka Ho, Cheuk Ka Wai, Cheung Wai Man, Chan Kwan Lok, Leung Ka Yin, Leung Lai Man, Choi Tak Yee, Cheng Dan Shan, and Lai Wan Ting!

The exhibition features a selection of 31 meticulous paintings of landscapes, flowers and birds, and figures, showcasing the media, techniques, aesthetics, and meanings of meticulous painting. “New Tradition” presents the rich and diverse creations of a new generation of local ink artists, who draw inspiration from their predecessors while incorporating their own interpretations and styles, demonstrating the inclusive aesthetics of ink art. Building on traditional foundations, they innovate in their expressive techniques and stylistic skills, exploring complex emotions and spiritual desires.

Painters use the medium of meticulous traditional Chinese painting to record the details of Hong Kong’s urban life, embodying the connection between tradition and modernity in their works. The nine participating artists deliberately chose meticulous painting as their visual language. While they draw inspiration from classical expressive modes, their works all have unique elements that set them apart from tradition. Additionally, the artists’ personal styles also exhibit contemporary characteristics, presenting a fresh aesthetic perspective that is definitely worth appreciating!
