We often see the works of Wilson Shieh and Oscar Sai-ho Tsui in local exhibitions, even though their creative mediums are completely different, their creative themes revolve around local culture. It turns out that the two have known each other for over 20 years. They both graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Department of Fine Arts in 2001. Recently, they held a joint exhibition at PMQ, ostensibly to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their master’s graduation, but it is also a testament to their many years of friendship.
Shi Jiahao combines traditional Chinese meticulous figure painting techniques with contemporary ideas and Hong Kong-style charm, developing a unique painting style that blends old and new. Xie Yan’an uses plastic paint on canvas as a creative medium, mastering Western contemporary painting language, and demonstrating a keen sense of popular culture and subculture. The works reflect personal perspectives through popular images. This exhibition showcases new works by both artists, depicting cultural idols that accompanied them in their growth, with the two even collaborating on pieces for this exhibition for the first time.
The theme of the work is quite rich. In addition to a series of meticulous works by Shi Jiahao combining Chinese painted porcelain patterns with rock album covers, Xie Yan’an also painted many cultural images full of local colors. When the exhibition space is surrounded by traditional Chinese meticulous ink paintings and colorful contemporary plastic colors, it not only does not appear abrupt, but also brings a great sense of freshness to the audience.
Rare collaboration between two masters, don’t miss this exhibition!
