The internationally acclaimed classic musical “The Sound of Music” has finally arrived in Hong Kong, with a grand performance at the Xiqu Centre in the West Kowloon Cultural District. This is the first international musical to be performed at the Xiqu Centre!
This story about love, kindness, hope, and survival is inspired by the true story of Maria Augusta von Trapp, renamed Maria Rainer, and tells an uplifting tale. Maria is a lively and witty family teacher who brings music into the lives of widowed Captain Von Trapp and his seven children, completely changing their lives. Before the escalating tension of World War II, she leads the whole family over the Alps to escape the threat of war. The story’s classic status has been presented as a musical for many years and later adapted into a film, becoming one of the highest-grossing musicals in history.
The work includes generations of classic songs that are catchy and memorable, including “Do-Re-Mi,” “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” and the musical’s theme song “The Sound of Music,” which are definitely highlights of the musical; in terms of actors, it is portrayed by Natalie Duncan as the female lead Maria Rainer, Corey Greenan as Captain Von Trapp, and Lauren Kidwell as Mother Abbess, a very eye-catching combination.

However, to celebrate the 65th anniversary of this classic work, the touring production is produced by Broadway International Group, and is directed by the legendary director and three-time Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien, musical tour director Matt Lenz, global producer of musicals Simone Genatt and Marc Routh. They also personally came to Hong Kong to witness the first performance in Hong Kong.
