Burberry Resort 2021: Delivering warmth through the most familiar things in the most turbulent times.

After Riccardo Tisci took over as the creative director of Burberry, he gave this old-fashioned fashion house a major makeover, moving towards a more youthful direction. The TB monogram he created has also won the hearts of many fashion enthusiasts, and the brand’s stock price soared to levels far exceeding the past 10 years after he joined. Recently, there have been rumors that this “hero” will leave, but Burberry quickly denied the rumors. However, discussions continue. Nevertheless, despite the rumors, Burberry’s 2021 early spring collection still debuted as scheduled.

In this early spring series lookbook, I unexpectedly saw the routine of Gucci Epilogue release, with not professional models but Burberry’s own employees posing. There are employees from the retail department, as well as from the design team, including brand CEO Judy Collinson. They put on the collection’s clothing, took photos outside their own homes, capturing the surrounding street elements and the English garden, feeling more authentic and down-to-earth.

Taking this step is not only to maintain the safest social distance during the pandemic but also to better fit the creative concept of the series. Riccardo Tisci has rethought things in such turbulent times, believing that taking this opportunity to find a new direction will bring a different sense of freshness and appeal, thus creating the creative framework for this series: “a little something Burberry for everyone”. The new direction devised by Riccardo Tisci is to completely rid the collection of a commercial feel, using the most familiar objects to convey a sense of comfort, safety, and warmth, hence moving the shooting location to a place closest to everyone’s daily life.

As for how Riccardo Tisci interprets the “familiar feeling” in his designs? He looks back at Burberry’s past designs, drawing inspiration from the most classic checkered patterns, striped elements, and unicorn logo, then repackages them with a modern and stylish approach. Additionally, he includes rose-print silk tops, black wool coats, Burberry-logo pleated skirts, and trench coats, perfectly blending classic reproductions with a sense of modernity. While not stunningly impressive, it exudes an irreplaceable sense of warmth.
