Spanish artist August Vilella continues the theme of the season with his exhibition “Summer Breeze,” following his solo exhibition “Autumn Fairy Tale” at JPS Gallery in 2021. Through his iconic characters with large eyes, he takes us on a journey through surreal meditation, allowing us to experience the dreamy atmosphere of early summer together!
August creates imaginative works with a sense of surrealistic self-consciousness, with every stroke guided by the subconscious. These creatures, with their bright and lively eyes, not only depict the artist’s inner world but also engage in a dialogue with the audience. The artist once said, “I didn’t deliberately choose my role; to some extent… they chose me.” They serve as a substitute for the artist in communicating with the audience.
Unlike August’s previous melancholic interpretations, the new collection presents a distinct and lively artistic style, with the curious gaze of the characters reflecting the vibrant elements of summer. The artist delicately applies layers of oil paint and varnish on the canvas, along with thin and textured brushstrokes, creating both glamorous and vivid fictional scenes that strongly contrast with the unrestricted creative process.

In the painting “Summer Friends” (2023), August skillfully uses lighting effects and simple yet direct composition to create a sensual and somewhat hazy atmosphere, attracting viewers to ponder its meaning. However, due to each viewer’s unique understanding, the significance of the artwork becomes one-of-a-kind, like a mirror reflecting the thoughts buried deep within us. Let us appreciate August’s magnificent work, driven by the subconscious, under the gentle touch of the summer breeze. Through the characters’ windows to their souls, let us listen to the overlooked voices of the heart!
