K11 MUSEA’s annual art event, Art Karnival, always brings highly topical exhibitions. This year’s event will focus on the history of global graffiti and street art movements, featuring the “City As Studio” group exhibition. The exhibition will showcase the works of over 30 artists from around the world, with over 100 pieces spanning different eras, styles, and regions. It includes renowned names in the street art scene such as Basquiat, FUTURA, Keith Haring, KAWS, and more, making for an impressive lineup!
This exhibition invited Jeffrey Deitch, known as the “father of graffiti and street art,” as the curator. Since the 1980s, Deitch has been a champion of graffiti art. With his vision for trends and street art, he brings rich meaning to “City As Studio.” This time, he will lead Hong Kong audiences to review several generations of artwork, organizing and presenting the development of graffiti and street art over half a century.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, a group of innovative artists including Fab 5 Freddy, FUTURA, and Jean-Michel Basquiat created an important art scene and dialogue in downtown New York City. Subsequently, influential artists such as Barry McGee, Mister Cartoon, and OSGEMEOS developed groundbreaking styles in San Francisco, East Los Angeles, and São Paulo. Additionally, the exhibition will also document the emergence and evolution of young street artists from the new generation in New York, such as KAWS and AIKO.
The exhibition highlights include Basquiat’s “Valentine” created in 1984, borrowed for display by American photographer Paige Powell, CRASH’s “The Bomb” created in 1983, and Hering’s monumental spray painting “Untitled” created in 1983, spanning three meters.
In addition, Shepard Fairey’s portrait paintings “Keith Haring” (Red Series) and “Basquiat” (Red Series), created in 2010, demonstrate how early practitioners of this genre continue to inspire young artists, while KAWS’ personal collection – “El Diablo” created by FUTURA in 1985 – embodies the intergenerational dialogue and influence among street artists today.
The above is just a part of the highlights of the exhibition, there are more carefully crafted works by artists waiting for everyone to discover in person!
