Established in Hong Kong for 17 years, the long-established gallery Opera Gallery recently relocated from its old location on Wyndham Street to the Grand Hyatt Plaza. It recently held a grand opening exhibition “Zhu Dequn,” showcasing 18 brilliant works from the lyrical abstract master Zhu Dequn’s creative career, injecting the new space with a unique atmosphere of abstract expressionism!
The new space is located in the heart of Central, situated at 9 Queen’s Road Central, covering an area of 5,500 square feet, spanning 3 floors of Jiahuan Square. Whether it’s the decoration or the spatial layout, it is very grand! With the aim of making art more accessible to the public, the new location intentionally places sofas and benches, making the gallery space elegant and also homey.
It is worth mentioning that in addition to the exhibition space on the ground, there are also many precious collections of galleries on the underground and one floor above, including diverse works by well-known artists such as Pablo Ruiz Picasso, Manolo Valdés, and Fernando Botero.
As for the opening exhibition, the new gallery director Olivier Demblum led the team to present the opening exhibition “Zhu Dequn”, showcasing the important works of the lyrical abstract master Zhu Dequn from different periods. Zhu Dequn was born in 1920 and moved to Paris in 1955, considered a pioneer of Chinese modernist art. His works use rhythmic lines to express memory and intimate emotions, with winding lines and space bringing a daunting charm to the paintings.
Zhu Dequn received formal training in calligraphy, and his cursive brushwork was already perfected. He later studied ink painting under the modern ink painting master Pan Tianshou, which inspired his later path towards abstract style. His works are mainly themed around classical paintings and poetry, with blocks of color and geometric lines expressing an atmosphere of abstract expressionism. By blending traditional Chinese artistic style with Western modernism, he has created a unique Eastern abstract style.
In addition to the colorful abstract painting style, the exhibition also showcases Zhu Dequn’s ink paintings from the 1990s. During this period, the artist often added Western watercolors to the ink, carrying the color gradient effects from his oil painting creations and displaying the layered characteristics of ink separation in traditional Chinese painting. The artworks from different periods resonate with each other in the gallery, providing the audience with an in-depth understanding of the artist’s creative career context.
Featuring masterpieces by renowned artists and elegant exhibition spaces, Opera Gallery’s carefully curated new space and opening exhibition are sure to impress!
