Hong Kong Open Printshop (HKOP), which has been dedicated to conserving and promoting the local printmaking culture, will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year.
HKOP is Hong Kong’s first professional art organization founded and managed by printmakers, and is the largest professional printmaking institution in the region. Since 2000, it has been promoting and popularizing contemporary printmaking, facilitating international cultural exchange, enhancing artistic creation, and making significant contributions to the conservation and inheritance of local printmaking culture. It has also launched the Hong Kong Print Workshop Annual Award and the HKOP Fine Print Award, becoming a cradle for nurturing emerging printmaking artists. However, as a platform that prioritizes experience, it has decided to integrate and expand its existing space into “HKOP Contemporary Printmaking.” Through the “Prologue: HKOP Contemporary Printmaking Fundraising Exhibition,” it will share the blueprint for future development with everyone, showcasing the works of seasoned artists and emerging artists to promote local creation and conserve printmaking culture.
The three-day “Opening: HKOP Contemporary Printmaking Fundraising Exhibition” will be held at PMQ in Central. In addition to the exhibition, demonstrations, guided tours, and letterpress printing experiences, this fundraising exhibition will also feature jazz and other music performances. We look forward to exploring the new space and future development of HKOP Contemporary Printmaking with everyone. The studio also greatly needs the support of all sectors of society to continue nurturing new talents, promoting creation and appreciation, advancing research and conservation work on local printmaking culture. Friends who are interested in learning more, remember to experience it!

As the cradle of nurturing new talents in printmaking and graphic arts, there have been 16 award winners since 2018, and they are gradually making a name for themselves in the industry, each with their own unique characteristics.
For example, Lin Lexin, Lin Jingtai, Liu Jiachun, and Li Xiaowei all create relief woodcuts, but their works have different styles; while Huang Haoting, Zhang Ziqi, Liu Hanglin, Xu Qiyin, Chen Cien, and Chen Xiaoying showcase the spectrum of intaglio prints with their color overlay, mezzotint, aquatint, and photo-etching techniques, as well as Ho Shang’en’s silk screen prints, showcasing new creative forces in local printmaking and image art.

“Prologue: HKOP Contemporary Print Art Fundraising Exhibition”
The exhibition will be divided into two parts, reviewing the development of HKOP over the past 24 years, as well as showcasing recent works by veteran artists Li Mei-chuen, Cheung Chung-chu, and Fung Ho-yan, as well as works by emerging artists.
The HKOP Contemporary Printmaking, which will open in 2025, will be located at PMQ in Central and the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre in Shek Kip Mei.
In terms of contemporary printmaking in Hong Kong, this location holds great geographical and historical significance – since the mid-19th century, the printing industry in Hong Kong has developed in the Central and Sheung Wan areas, and during the heyday of the local printing industry, there were over two hundred family-run letterpress printing companies and related industries concentrated here. More importantly, Aberdeen Street is the birthplace of “Hong Kong Characters” (the world’s first complete set of Chinese metal type), cast at the London Missionary Society’s press (the Ying Wa College) at 28 Aberdeen Street, and exported worldwide. It is an important part of Hong Kong’s cultural heritage, and this set of “Hong Kong Characters” is also a key research project for Hong Kong printmaking studios.
