Enjoy an art-filled weekend! The Southern District Gallery Day brings a new exhibition, along with screenings and artist talks!

When it comes to art gallery hubs, do you first think of the Central district? While Central has many top-notch art spaces, the Wong Chuk Hang area in the Southern District also houses many galleries that regularly present exhibitions. The 8th Southside Saturday will kick off tomorrow (November 6th), with Lucie Chang Fine Arts, Whitestone Gallery, Artify Gallery, Art Statements, Sin Sin Fine Art, and de Sarthe Gallery participating, bringing art lovers new exhibitions, screenings, readings, and art dialogues!

Exhibition Opening: Sin Sin Fine Art, Art Experience Gallery

Sin Sin Fine Art presents a New Year group exhibition – “Attitude”, featuring 4 Hong Kong-born artists passionate about ceramics, including Chiu So-lan, Lee Man-yip, Leung Cho-yee, and Lee Wai-han. The exhibition showcases a variety of works, including functional ceramics, ceramic sculptures, mixed media, and installation art. Through this exhibition, we hope to reveal and discover the history and stories of ceramics in Hong Kong.

In this exhibition, we will symbolize eggs as one of our concepts. Each egg is unique and different, metaphorically representing that even though we are all born in different backgrounds, with different talents, we can still choose our destiny and change our lives through hard work and a positive attitude.

Yi-Du Gallery will launch the “Symphony of Nature” exhibition, which is curated to support the World Wildlife Fund’s “Art For Your World” initiative, aiming to mobilize the art world to combat the climate crisis.
The exhibition features works by Lau Ka Chun, Yumi Cheung Ka Yu, Angki Purbandono, April Ng, Cai Jinwei, Leah Clough, Neal Adams, Guang-Yu Zhang, Daehyun Kim, and Yen Phang.

Art Dialogue: Dessa Gallery

The gallery is currently holding a solo exhibition by local conceptual artist Mak Ying Tung II. The first discussion’s theme is “Post-Pandemic Era: Hong Kong Artists and Practices,” exploring how Hong Kong influences and embodies many Hong Kong artists, including Mak Ying Tung II, and their practices in the post-pandemic era. The discussion will take place from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm.

The second dialogue is titled “Artistic Abstraction? Aesthetic and Philosophical Reflections in Contemporary Art.” Mai Yingtong’s works reflect on the issues faced in the 21st century through research on philosophy, art history, culture, the ever-changing socio-political environment, the internet, and new technologies. The dialogue will invite the artist herself to discuss how her practice extends to the current state of contemporary art, exploring the concepts of aesthetics and how the public should understand and appreciate contemporary art.

Screening and Reading Event: Wood Gallery, Art Advocacy Gallery

Widewood Gallery is presenting a solo exhibition by New York-based artist Shen Chen, showcasing 12 paintings created between 2009 and 2021. Throughout his artistic career, Shen Chen has always emphasized the process and materials of art. In recent years, he has mainly used acrylic paint from the West, and through his training and understanding of ink painting, he has rediscovered the possibilities of acrylic. The gallery will screen a documentary related to the artist tomorrow.

Yi Shang Gallery in Aberdeen, Hong Kong showcases the masterpieces of five internationally renowned ink painters including Gao Xingjian, Gu Gan, Ding Xiongquan, Wang Tiande, and Wang Dongling, along with their written works. Throughout the day, excerpts from different works will be read every hour, such as Gao Xingjian’s Nobel Prize-winning novel “Soul Mountain,” Li Bai, Du Fu, and Su Dongpo’s poems translated by Ding Xiongquan, as well as artistic insights from Wang Tiande, Wang Dongling, and Gu Gan, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of these artists’ creations.
