In the recently released epic war film “Dunkirk,” the male lead Cillian Murphy’s deep, melancholic, and story-filled blue eyes penetrate the hearts of the audience, leading us into the inner world of the “father of the atomic bomb.” His acting has received high praise. From his roles in “The Dark Knight,” “Inception,” “Peaky Blinders,” to “Dunkirk,” he has collaborated with the genius director Nolan for nearly 20 years, finally breaking free from supporting roles and becoming “Nolan’s leading man” for the first time! Let’s get to know this low-key powerhouse actor together!
Cillian Murphy, born in Ireland in 1967, may be unknown to many people. Before becoming an actor, Cillian Murphy started writing songs at the age of 10 and even formed his own band called “Sons of Mr. Green Genes” where he played the guitar. In addition to releasing music, he was fortunate enough to secure a five-album record deal.
At the time, Cillian Murphy, who was studying law at University College Cork, was not interested in studying. It wasn’t until he saw a stage play of “A Clockwork Orange” that his desire to perform was ignited, planting the seed of his dream to become an actor. He then decided to drop out of school and pursue his dream, fully dedicating himself to the performing arts. Finally, after auditioning, he successfully obtained his first theatrical role as “Pig” in the stage play “Disco Pigs,” officially embarking on his acting career.

Cillian Murphy had already filmed numerous works before starring in “Inception”. After making his debut in the 2002 British disaster film “28 Days Later” directed by Danny Boyle, he caught the attention of director Christopher Nolan and went on to appear in films such as “Cold Mountain”, “The Girl with a Pearl Earring”, and “Breakfast on Pluto”. He successfully entered the American film industry and has since played supporting roles in multiple Hollywood films.
Until 2005, Cillian Murphy auditioned for Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins,” but ultimately missed out on the lead role, losing to Christian Charles Philip Bale. However, due to Murphy’s impressive audition, everyone present praised his performance, and he ultimately succeeded in obtaining the role of the villain “Scarecrow,” which greatly increased his fame!
He began his collaboration with Nolan almost 20 years ago, appearing in 6 of Nolan’s films including “The Dark Knight Trilogy”, “Inception”, “Dunkirk”, “The Departed”, and others. Despite having worked on many films, Cillian Murphy still remains Nolan’s trusted “supporting actor” and has not yet played a protagonist role.
You have definitely seen Cillian Murphy’s movies, but you may not necessarily know him. He once revealed in an interview, “I have openly and privately told Nolan that if I have the time and he needs me, no matter how big or small the role, I will act. But to be honest, deep down, I really hope to play the lead role for Nolan once, which is something I have never said to anyone before.” From supporting roles to his continuous efforts until now, until “Auburn”, Cillian Murphy finally became Nolan’s male lead for the first time, and once again caused a sensation with the film, making his acting career go uphill.
