Dior’s creative director for women’s wear, Maria Grazia Chiuri, has always traveled around the world to release different collections for the brand. Following the release of the Fall 2023 collection in Mumbai, India at the end of March this year, the Spring 2024 show took place in the capital city of Mexico, Mexico City.
For Maria Grazia Chiuri, Mexico is an emotionally inspiring place, and the famous local artist Frida Kahlo has become the inspiration for this season’s fashion show. The show is being held at the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso, the school where Frida Kahlo studied and where she met her mentor and partner Diego Rivera. This location holds great symbolism.

The 2024 early spring collection incorporates Mexican cultural features and craftsmanship, taking distorted photos of gender boundaries from Frida Kahlo’s series as inspiration. The suit style in the collection pays homage to her fashion sense, while also interpreting the customs of Tehuana by pairing umbrella skirts with traditional waistcoats known as The Huipil. One of the dresses in the collection, in pink, also brings to mind the outfit Frida Kahlo wore in one of her self-portraits.
Maria Grazia Chiuri has once again established a strong connection with local talented artists to create original embroidery for dresses and shirts, showcasing her expertise and craftsmanship with the artists. Cotton, linen, and silk lace, combined with delicate collar designs, interpret the feminine temperament in vibrant colors that are closely linked to the natural environment. The butterfly, symbolizing freedom and liberation, runs through the collection, appearing as jacquard embroidery on clothing, necklaces, and waistbands, as if dancing in a colorful pattern. Additionally, the collection depicts Mexican flora and fauna, including parrots, monkeys, and birds of paradise. Finally, a series of exquisite white cotton dresses with red embroidery adds the perfect finishing touch to the show.
