Chanel 2023 Autumn/Winter Collection, creative director Virginie Viard focuses on camellias, infusing the collection with a joyful atmosphere.
In 1923, Coco Chanel first showcased her beloved camellia flower on clothing, making it the brand’s symbol and iconic element. As the focus of this season, the runway was adorned with giant white camellia installations, and each guest’s seat had a real camellia flower. The fashion show was opened by a film starring brand ambassador and Japanese actress Kiko Mizuhara. Virginie Viard believes that the camellia flower is not just the theme of this season, but “a timeless and ever-fresh classic design element that blooms in the aesthetics of Chanel.” It is both soft and powerful.

The series is dominated by black and white, with subtle shades of color and grayish pink interspersed, using colors in just the right way to present a kind of infectiousness. Camellias become patterns on the tweed coats; they also appear as polka dot patterns on the herringbone suits; giant and fluffy camellia patterns are also seen on knitted sweaters, extending to handbags and shoes, blooming freely on coats, pockets, and buttons, appearing everywhere.
In terms of clothing design, it has a touch of menswear meaning, while also carrying a gentle and romantic sentiment, showcasing a charm that is both strong and soft. Asymmetric coats, split-front dresses, Bermuda shorts suits with asymmetric front panels, as well as ruffles, backless designs, beads and sequins, and knitted iridescent yarn details, exude a 1970s vibe and a hint of British fashion. The exquisite craftsmanship and naturally elegant fabrics complement each other, making this autumn/winter collection more practical and enchanting.
