Combining fashion and art always sparks a different kind of freshness and opens up new horizons. Louis Vuitton, following the success of last year’s inaugural Artycapucines project, which invited artists to reinterpret the brand’s classic Capucines handbag with their unique aesthetics, continues to build on that success this year. They have enlisted 6 famous contemporary artists to unleash their creativity, using the Capucines handbag as a canvas and employing different mediums and materials to give it a unique appearance.
ArtyCapucines by Beatriz Milhazes
Painter Beatriz Milhazes, known for her colorful and culturally rich Brazilian imagery and Western modernism, continues to use a variety of colors to render vibrant circular patterns overlapping on the Capucines, adding a lively touch to the handbag. In addition, she also incorporates different materials to enrich the texture of the handbag, including adding gold foil, inlaying molded silicone and logos, and using enamel inlay and gel LV logos. Moreover, craftsmen process 18 types of leather to the same thickness, then use innovative inlay techniques to embed them into the lambskin base of the handbag, witnessing extraordinary craftsmanship.
ArtyCapucines by Jean-Michel Othoniel
As for the “nomadic creator” Jean-Michel Othoniel who likes to experiment with various materials and media, he has created an Artycapucines handbag full of tropical charm. The body of the bag is hand-woven with wine palm leaf fibers, and the top is adorned with black silk satin used in haute couture for a handmade finish, highlighting its uniqueness through manual craftsmanship. The handle is made of large black resin beads, adding a glamorous and eye-catching feel, while also echoing Jean-Michel’s large-scale masterpiece in the Louvre Museum in Paris.
ArtyCapucines by Josh Smith
Josh Smith, who excels in semi-abstract paintings, uses his iconic “name” artwork as the blueprint for the Capucines handbag, adding a strong personal touch with the large “JOSH” lettering on the bag. To perfectly replicate the original details, white stitching is embroidered on the surface of the handbag to recreate the original brushstrokes of the artwork; additionally, the fabric and stitching are printed with patterns to enhance the delicacy. Every other detail is meticulously executed, with the iconic LV logo made of inlaid metal, the handle made of pure pear wood, and the lining silk-screened with Josh’s representative work “Palm#3”, creating a rich tactile experience through the interplay of materials.
ArtyCapucines by Henry Taylor
Henry Taylor focuses on his outstanding oil portrait creations, incorporating his 2017 work “A Young Master” into the design of the Capucines handbag. After over a hundred experiments, craftsmen used innovative laser printing technology and traditional inlay techniques to reproduce the portrait of the late African American artist Noah Davis on the gray-brown Taurillon leather, aiming to faithfully recreate the original brushstrokes and texture, while also creating a sculptural three-dimensional bas-relief effect.
Artycapucines by LiuWei
Known for his provocative and unclassifiable works, Liu Wei used his giant sculpture installation “Microscopic World” as the basis for his creation. He used thermoforming technology to create aluminum metal petals from 5 types of silver leather, then fixed them to the surface by directly inserting or riveting with LV logo-engraved rivets, presenting an avant-garde and innovative style. The black resin-made handle is connected to the body of the bag by a ring filled with metal spheres, creating an artistic beauty of the sculpture, while also imbuing a futuristic sense of style.
Artycapucines by ZhaoZhao
Chinese artist Zhao Zhao’s work has always been filled with a sense of rebellion and provocation, and this time he used the sculpture “Mi Liu No. 3” created in 2018 as the design inspiration. The sculpture is made of 353 pieces of laser-cut leather in 5 different types, with hand embroidery, machine embroidery, printed patterns, or embossing added to accurately recreate the original metal components. After completing these preparatory work, craftsmen assemble and sew each piece of leather, perfectly covering the handbag, seamlessly integrating with the Capucines handbag itself.
The Artycapucines collection handbags have been available for sale at selected global boutiques since October 30th, with each limited to 200 pieces.
