The latest Miu Miu ad campaign shot by Steven Meisel features Gigi Hadid as a modern lady, highlighting the Arcadie and Wander handbags to celebrate the brand’s classic matelassé leather craftsmanship.
The advertising inspiration comes from the artistic style of Yevonde Middleton, a pioneering British photographer. Yevonde was a feminist actively advocating for women’s suffrage, and her photography career embodied a spirit of freedom and independence. At just 21 years old, she opened her own photography studio, which was a rare achievement in an era when women were limited to certain types of work. She did not use her surname as a signature on her works, fully embodying her personal creative authority and female identity.
Yevonde’s work in the 1930s was precise and subtle in color, and this advertising campaign pays tribute to her work through visually similar images. In the ad, Gigi Hadid appears in an elegant style, sitting under delicate gradient colors, deliberately posing with Arcadie and Wander handbags held close or tightly grasped, designed in classic caramel and cognac hues, or vibrant orange and gold, echoing the days of old yet reflecting a contemporary spirit of fearlessness from the images shot by Meisel.
