Tear makeup has recently gained high popularity and exposure, not only on the fashion runway, but also on concert stages, and the cover of fashion magazines. This highly theatrical makeup look may seem difficult to incorporate into everyday life outfits. However, with some careful consideration and by capturing the essence of tear makeup, it is possible to seamlessly integrate this trendy look into your daily life!
Since the tear makeup from GUCCI F/W 2019 and Acne Studios S/S 2020 made its debut, the enchanting and peculiar tearful eye makeup has become a trend. Jolin Tsai, Sammi Cheng, Wu Jinyan, and even Korean makeup guru Pony have personally demonstrated different styles of tearful eye makeup. After seeing these different demonstrations, have you learned the essence of it?
At Milan Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2019, GUCCI’s Global Makeup Artist Thomas de Kluyver brought a stunning tear makeup look to fashion enthusiasts. Using unique transparent three-dimensional materials on the face of model Ellia Sophia, who wore colored contact lenses, creating a captivating and eerie ethereal atmosphere that exuded an irresistible intimidating feeling, becoming the highlight of the entire fashion show.
Not sure if inspired by Thomas de Kluyver’s tear makeup, another international makeup artist Peter Philips designed a tear makeup 2.0 for Acne Studios SS20 fashion show. Thomas de Kluyver’s tear makeup was just stuck on the face, while Peter Philips attached fish silk with droplet-shaped beads to the eyebrows, moving with every step and action of the models, making the beads sway naturally and vividly in a three-dimensional way!
Besides the fashion runway, Taiwanese pop diva Jolin Tsai and Hong Kong pop diva Sammi Cheng have both demonstrated the trending tear makeup. Jolin was the first to sport tear makeup when shooting a cover story for the mainland fashion magazine “OK! Wonderful,” with a full black outfit and perfect expression, perfectly interpreting the sorrowful feeling of tear makeup. After just completing a concert, Sammi incorporated tear elements into one of her concert makeup looks, with makeup artist Zing adding glitter to mimic tears with transparent materials, reflecting under the stage lights, making the sparkling tears even more touching.
To incorporate the stage-like three-dimensional teardrop makeup above into daily dressing, you may want to learn from Mainland Chinese actress Wu Jinyan and Korean makeup guru Pony! When Wu Jinyan attended the Miss Dior exhibition event in Shanghai earlier, she deliberately stuck three rhinestones in the center of her lower eyelid to create a pitiful feeling of tears in her eyes. Pony’s demonstration is even simpler for daily use, focusing on applying silver-white shimmer powder to the center of the lower eyelid, without the need for rhinestones, making it easy to create a lovable teary eye makeup look.
The essence of teary eye makeup lies in the lower eyelid position, but you cannot be careless about the color of the eyeshadow. If the colors of the upper and lower eyelids do not coordinate, the entire eye makeup will be ruined. Since the shimmer used to create teary eyes is mostly silver-white, it is recommended to choose some purple-blue-gray hues for the upper eyelid position to make the entire eye makeup feel more harmonious.
The simplest teardrop makeup look is none other than Pony’s demonstration, with shimmer dots embellishing the center of the eyelids to create the illusion of condensed tears. Due to the narrow position of the lower eyelids and frequent blinking, larger and thicker shimmer flakes are difficult to adhere to for a long time. It is recommended to use shimmer gel with stronger adhesion, or shimmer with finer particles, to make the sparkling makeup effect last longer.
Eye makeup focuses on a shimmering light feel, so for lip makeup, it is recommended to use lip gloss with a strong shine to balance the overall look. Choose natural pink shades for color selection, as overly bright and intense lip colors clash with the innocent and pitiful feel emphasized by the eye makeup, so it is not recommended to try.
