Dans l’esprit de tous, le panda géant, trésor national chinois, a toujours été extrêmement rare. Cependant, avec la conservation de leur habitat, la Chine a annoncé en juillet 2021 qu’ils ne sont plus une espèce en voie de disparition. L’artiste américain Rob Pruitt a été inspiré par cet événement et a présenté une exposition personnelle sur le thème des pandas intitulée « No longer endangered, but vulnerable ».
Rob Pruitt a toujours eu une passion pour les pandas depuis son enfance. Il habitait dans la banlieue de Washington D.C. où le gouvernement local avait reçu un couple de pandas nommés « Ling-Ling » et « Hsing-Hsing ». Depuis lors, il demandait souvent à ses parents de l’emmener au zoo pour capturer les pandas avec un pinceau et un appareil photo. Son amour pour les pandas perdure encore aujourd’hui et est devenu l’un de ses thèmes de création emblématiques.
Les artistes espèrent que cette exposition apportera aux spectateurs un rappel léger, indiquant que bien que les pandas ne soient « plus en voie d’extinction, ils restent fragiles ». En même temps, l’état des pandas nous rappelle que, avec l’augmentation des catastrophes environnementales et l’instabilité géopolitique actuelle, les gens font face à des situations tendues et dangereuses. Cependant, il est important de noter que la sécurité temporaire ne signifie pas l’éternité, nous devons rester vigilants face aux crises qui nous entourent.
