Hong Kong comic artist, animation director, and visual artist, Kong Chong-chuen (Kong Kee), has a diverse artistic style and has created many classic works over the years, such as “Flawed Shoes,” “Tintin Penguin,” “The Great Robbery – Comics Hong Kong Literature Volume 1 and 2” co-authored with Zhihai, “Rice Air,” “Pandaman,” and more. In 2015, he created a comic work titled “Blur in Fragrant Harbor” for the British band Blur, which was highly praised by Britpop fans. Recently, Kong Kee held a solo exhibition titled “Kong Chong-chuen: Warring States Punk” at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, taking viewers on a fantastical journey through time and space using different mediums.
The exhibition combines rich media such as animation, sound, and neon lights to explore alternative possibilities in history. Jiang Ji reimagines the ending of Qu Yuan, a legendary Chinese poet who lived from 339-278 BC, imagining his resurrection two thousand years after his death, suddenly thrown into a cyberpunk future by the Miluo River.
“Jiang Kangquan: Warring States Punk” not only exhibits existing works, but also commissions Jiang Ji to create site-specific installations, including the digital triptych “Past, Present, Future, Blood, Tears, Wandering” in response to the large arched window in the multi-level exhibition hall of the museum; and the giant neon light “Time Stopping is Mountain, Time Flowing is Water,” interpreting the concepts of stillness and movement in space.
