Capture the cityscape and stories! Local picture book artist Mao Shan’s solo exhibition is now taking place at Parallel Space.

This Christmas, in addition to holiday parties, why not visit the exhibition at Parallel Space in Sham Shui Po and take a closer look at a Hong Kong story about cats and spring? Hong Kong picture book artist Maoshan Connie brings her personal art exhibition, and her new picture book “On the Slow Boat to Lantau Island” will also be released during the exhibition period.

Maoshan Connie, during her university years, majored in architecture and later studied children’s literature. She firmly believes in sharing interesting information with the world through drawing/illustration. She has created picture books and artworks on various topics such as life and death education, tree conservation, and intellectual disabilities. In 2014, she also allowed Hong Kong people to write letters to their beloved trees, in order to raise awareness of the environment around them. In addition, she has held solo exhibitions at the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale and has exhibited her works in cities such as Hong Kong, London, and Cambridge. She has also been involved in coordinating temporary foster families at the animal charity organization LAP.

She creates local stories and Hong Kong city maps with her innocent drawing style, which are familiar to people. This exhibition will showcase a new picture book “On the Slow Boat to Lantau Island,” a series of original paintings, and Hong Kong community map works that have never been officially exhibited before.

“Slow Boat to Lantau Island” is inspired by a true story, featuring a cat who lives on a boat and his sailor owner. The story documents their daily lives, juxtaposing the busyness of modern Hong Kongers with the laziness of the cat, while also interspersing real scenery from the harbor. “Sea mist” only appears on the sea surface, creating a scenery where boats seem to float in the clouds. Every spring, many Hong Kong photographers chase after the sea mist, and you can also take a closer look at this unique scenery in this work.
