If we talk about which classic cartoon accompanied this generation’s growth, “Sesame Street” from the United States definitely holds a place in everyone’s heart. And for artist Fanny Brodar, these childhood entertainments carry the memories of joy and worry from her childhood! Recently, Nothing At All presented the artist’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, “It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” showcasing a total of 15 paintings revolving around “love.”
Unlike other artists, Fanny Brodar didn’t start her artistic career until she was in her 40s. During the early stages of the pandemic, she developed an interest in painting, which allowed her to overcome negative emotions and pursue her true self. She said, “That was the darkest period of my life, but also the most beautiful.” The works of renowned artist Rose Wylie, known for their childlike and cartoonish characters, inspired her to create colorful and joyful paintings.
The artist draws inspiration from the 70s’ “Sesame Street” and the 90s’ “Three Amigos”. Through these classic cartoon characters, Brodar leads the audience into her fictional magical world. She loves to create in a relaxed illustration style using oil pastels and acrylic paints, and through painting, she releases the darkest emotions in life and transforms them into the brightest works.

These animations are the carriers of the artist’s emotions, recording one by one the traumas she experienced in her childhood and the inner emotions she still holds as an adult. Years later, what remains deeply ingrained in her mind are not the details of television programs or her childhood experiences, but the feelings and images that accompany those fragmented memories that seem almost real.
