It is often said that the “Lion Rock Spirit” symbolizes a certain belief. Has our definition of it changed with the times from the 1970s to now? Perhaps we can get a glimpse of it in the works captured through the lens of this French photographer.
Blue Lotus Gallery recently announced that in September, they will be hosting a photo book launch event and solo exhibition for French photographer Romain Jacquet-Lagrèze, introducing the audience to his visual exploration of the stories between Hong Kong people and the famous Lion Rock.
As a famous mountain and landmark in Hong Kong, Lion Rock is not just a mountain, she symbolizes symbolism and meaning, evolving with the changing times. Inspired by the famous Japanese ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai’s woodblock print series “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji,” Romain decided to capture the thirty-six views of this famous Hong Kong mountain in a similar but modern way, using images to tell the legendary story.
Each piece can find the trace of Lion Rock, sometimes she lies quietly in the distance, half hidden by skyscrapers or the hustle and bustle of the city; sometimes she will be far away from the noise, enjoying the calm and peaceful countryside. Some works are taken at the break of dawn, some are taken at the blue hour of sunset in the western mountains… “Thirty-six Views of Lion Rock” is a love letter to the most familiar and beloved mountain peak of the people of Hong Kong.
These seemingly ordinary scenes are often familiar to Hong Kong people: perhaps on their daily commute, or maybe right outside their window. Feel free to visit the exhibition and revisit how this mountain, symbolizing a generation’s beliefs, has accompanied us along the way, still resolutely moving forward.
