The surreal floral metaphor reflects interpersonal relationships, Xin Zhao’s solo exhibition “Upside Down” overturns your impression of botanical paintings!

The mirrored image gives a visual sense of contradiction, but when this situation appears in stamp design, it greatly enhances its collectible value! Artist Ryan San takes “mirroring” as a concept, creating a series of surreal floral works that look back at the inner self and gaze at life, exploring a new perspective on the commonality between flowers and people!

The concept of the exhibition originated from a pair of positive and negative double-sided stamps, a rare design with inverted arrangement. When the two patterns are separated, their uniqueness is weakened. The artist captured the characteristics of the inverted stamps and created a piece with “inversion” as the theme. When fresh flowers intertwine, it represents the connection between people, weaving together to establish a network of communication, which is a reflection of everyone’s life and also the artist’s observation of society.

In contrast to the previous solo exhibition, the protagonists on the canvas are no longer the well-known cartoon characters, but vibrant flowers and plants. The biggest feature of this exhibition is the compatibility of Eastern and Western elements, with the composition of the paintings resembling traditional Chinese flower depictions. However, the artist uses a more conceptual brushstroke to express the vitality of the flowers, using them as a metaphor for interpersonal relationships. They are placed in different settings, showcasing blooming, withering, grafting, and other states, as if showing the audience a cycle of life!
