Life is like an ongoing weaving process, where even the smallest things are like a “thread”, weaving through to create different life experiences. The appearance of the “weaving product” depends on the choices made at every step of life. The Nan Fung Textile Factory recently presented the “Chen Ting-Wai Foundation Presents: ‘Spinning’ Like Life – Master Changlin’s Zen Art Exhibition 2021”, featuring works that combine Zen and art by Master Changlin, allowing everyone to reflect on life through textiles.
Before becoming a monk, Master Chang Lin was a well-known professional photographer in Hong Kong, with over 50 years of experience in photography. His works have been exhibited in various exhibitions. In this exhibition, he uses a woven piece made of different materials as the main focus, continuously threading through multiple Zen-inspired photographs and calligraphy pieces in an irregular manner on the display shelves. Through the rich visual and spatial experience presented by the exhibits, he guides the audience to feel the Buddhist and Zen messages of the impermanence and changes of all things in the universe.
There are four “Pause and Breathe” spaces set up at the exhibition site, allowing everyone to practice how to take care of their emotions by breathing with their hearts along with the sound file of the “10-minute meditation guide”; there is also a weaving workshop, with a piece woven from different materials, just like our lives, winding and weaving from beginning to end on the shelf, connecting to a loom at the back. It allows people to contemplate life through weaving; at the same time, there is a big calligraphy workshop, allowing everyone to personally experience the feeling of a master when painting big characters, while also understanding the principle of the artwork disappearing instantly and changing impermanently.
This is not just an art exhibition, but also a sharing of spiritual practice. In addition to the exhibition, there are guided tours and a series of Zen art workshops to help you understand “Zen” better. Interested friends may learn more about it on the website.
