Mentioning the famous contemporary Chinese female artist, we have to mention the name “Lalan” (Lalan). She is not only the ex-wife of the famous painter Zao Wou-Ki, but also a painter who combines Chinese Southern Song landscape painting with French lyrical abstract techniques. Her works are collected by the National Center for Fine Arts in France, the Pompidou Center in Paris, and the Shanghai Art Museum.
On the occasion of her 100th birthday, Asia Society Hong Kong Center presents “The Endless Figure: Exhibition of Xie Jinglan’s Art”. This is the fourth exhibition in the “20th Century Chinese Female Artists Series”, showcasing over 30 precious works that highlight the talent of female Chinese artists of that generation from various perspectives.
Xie Jinglan, who comes from a scholarly family background, was often associated with her ex-husband Zhao Wuji in the early days. However, her artistic talent is no less impressive than her ex-husband’s. She is active in the Paris art scene, has received professional vocal training, and has a deep understanding of composition and modern dance. Her creations combine the artistic forms of painting, dance, and music, pioneering a style of “mixed art.”
When she paints, she never sketches but paints by intuition. Therefore, a series of works not only demonstrate her skilled painting techniques and personal artistic style, but also present the mood she transforms into at the moment of painting, embodying extraordinary artistic attainments. Take advantage of this exhibition to get to know this extraordinary Chinese female artist.
