Tai Kwun Contemporary presents a new group exhibition “Trust & Confusion,” exploring the relationship between individuals and groups through art.

What determines the distance between people, or our relationship with the world? Tai Kwun Contemporary presents a new group exhibition “Trust & Confusion” spanning 8 months, featuring over 20 newly commissioned works from artists around the world, providing a space for contemplation.

“Trust & Confusion” exhibition showcases works by artists such as Tarek Atoui, Celeste Burlina, Alice Chauchat, Mette Edvardsen, Su Si Lok, Yu Mei Wah, and Tomiko Nishimura, using artistic expressions such as performance, memory, sound, and smell to immerse visitors in music videos, backstage theaters, meditation practices, or other situations, initiating a dialogue between “certainty” and “chance,” and experiencing the relationships that arise between things.

The exhibition transforms the “White Cube” space into an ever-changing environment, as soon as you enter the exhibition, there are multiple performances happening simultaneously, including dialogues between birds and humans, a series of unpublished photographic retrospectives, sudden solo dances, a sound sculpture gradually turning into a theatrical prop, a foam mattress transmitting radio program sounds, a video letter discussing virtual existence and global warming, etc.

The exhibition hall is divided into two spaces, “Day” and “Night.” The works in the “Day” space continue to grow and develop, while in each chapter, the “Night” brings the works of individual or duo artists. Some artists’ works may stay in the exhibition hall for several months, but they are constantly presented in new forms. There are also new works that appear at the right time, just like the essence of “trust” and “confusion,” constantly evolving and accumulating.

The works exhibited from May to June include “Still in Hong Kong” by choreographers Mui Cheuk-yin and Xavier Le Roy. The piece is composed of “Stills” that include movements, postures, and stories, which then extend into dialogues. Through cleverly arranged situations, it questions the distinctions between object and subject, organic and synthetic, dynamic and static, as well as the traditional boundaries between performers and audience. It also presents personal and collective memories, experiences, and relationships with Hong Kong.

Mette Edvardsen’s “Time Falls Asleep in the Afternoon Sun” is also a highlight of the exhibition, where a group of people recite different books together to form a set of “living books.” When a reader requests, the “living books” will take the reader to a cozy corner in the museum and recite the book to them. This project currently includes over 100 “living books” in 20 languages, and the exhibition has added 4 new works, including “The Happy Prince” (by Wilde), “If This Is a Man” (by Primo Levi), “Dubliners” (by James Joyce), and “A Woman Like Me” (by Sisi).
