Seeing this magnificent arched dome building, doesn’t it resemble the design of churches in Western countries? In fact, this is the “Grand World Phu Quoc” resort located on Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam. In order to allow visiting tourists to experience the local culture, this resort recently built a grand welcoming center, and surprisingly, all the materials used are locally abundant bamboo!
This magnificent welcome center was designed by the local architectural team VTN Architects (Võ Trọng Nghĩa Architects). The entire space covers an area of 1,460 square meters and features a dense grid-like structure constructed from 42,000 bamboo poles. They connected the bamboo branches together using ropes and bamboo pins, creating this intricately designed structure solely from the most natural materials, making it technically challenging.
Because the dome is not sealed with industrial materials such as cement, the bamboo woven shell has curved edges, resulting in some arched gaps. This expressive bamboo frame, although dense, allows natural light to pass through, making the space appear brighter and more ethereal. In addition, a gentle breeze can blow into the space, bringing people closer to a natural atmosphere.
Visitors to the Fuguo Island Resort will first be invited to walk through a square and enter the arched threshold of the bamboo welcome center designed by VTN Architects. Guests will pass through two halls shaped like “lotus and bronze drum” – traditional symbols of the region. The design team hopes that visitors come here not just for a simple vacation, but to experience more of Vietnam’s traditional culture.
