Sotheby’s recently launched another special auction, announcing the official launch of the first “Contemporary Art Online Auction”, featuring selected works by popular contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst, Edgar Plans, Michael Kagan, and Mr Doodle. Of particular note, the auction will also feature a spotlight auction of NFT artwork: Monkey Kingdom.
In recent years, the art world has seen unprecedented changes, with the emergence of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) expanding the market to astonishing dimensions. This auction marks Sotheby’s first online sale including NFTs, with a focus on the highly influential Monkey Kingdom series in Asia.
Monkey Kingdom, which combines traditional Chinese culture with contemporary art, brings two equally rich in Chinese cultural elements rare NFTs this time – the rare work “Melon Hat Wukong” (#1325) and another extremely rare legendary character based on Diamond Baepes, “Hua Mulan” (#1044) – both with a minimum estimated value of HKD 80,000. This time, Monkey Kingdom is also the first PFP NFT art series from Asia to be included in the auction.
Monkey Kingdom’s mission is to cultivate inclusivity in the NFT community while expanding Asian voices and experiences globally in the ecosystem of Web 3.0. Since its inception, Monkey Kingdom has quickly gained mainstream popularity in the Asian market and has garnered support from a host of celebrities, including world-renowned DJ and musician Steve Aoki, Edison Chen, JJ Lin, Eric Chou, Wang Yangming, Verbal, CEO of the fashion brand AMBUSH, and Ian Chan, member of the popular Hong Kong boy band Mirror. As the most popular Asian NFT collection to date, Monkey Kingdom has already set a total trading volume record of 90,000 SOL, and at the end of last year, it even set a record for the highest transaction price of 660 SOL.
In addition, it is worth mentioning that this event coincides with International Women’s Day on March 8th. Therefore, Sotheby’s also wants to celebrate this holiday by bringing the works of more than 20 female artists from around the world to this event, including Yayoi Kusama, Rhee Seundja, Chiharu Shiota, Danielle Orchard, Stickymonger, Super Future Kid, and Vivien Zhang, among others. From internationally renowned artists to up-and-coming talents, all are included in this event.
