Born in the late 19th century and active in the early 20th century, the famous French painter Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) excelled in landscape and still life painting. His works exaggerated and transformed objects using simple lines and vibrant colors, creating a decorative effect. Recently, Japanese fashion designer Atsuro Tayama collaborated across generations with this artistic master, combining his famous landscape paintings with fashion to create the limited edition Atsuro Tayama X Raoul Dufy collaboration series for this season.
Atsuro Tayama, who has a deep love for nature and flowers, has selected four works by Raoul Dufy that depict flowers and landscapes to design this season’s limited collaboration collection. In order to express his respect for the master artist, he intentionally did not divide the paintings randomly, but instead enlarged the four famous paintings in their entirety on shirts, sweatshirts, and skirts.
As Atsuro Tayama believes, “Paintings live within the frame.” Therefore, he uses common techniques in “soft avant-garde style,” such as folding and lace trim decoration, to create a sense of a frame in his clothing designs. This gives the artwork on the garments a sense of vitality and cleverly integrates the poetic sentiment of famous paintings’ colors into the soft avant-garde style, fully showcasing the brand’s elegance that is both gentle and strong, and calm and unhurried.
