Pipilotti Rist’s new video work will be showcased on the M+ facade during Art Month, celebrating the achievements of Hong Kong people and their “pair of hands” that built the city.

During the period from August to November last year, internationally renowned media artist Pipilotti Rist held a large-scale solo exhibition at Tai Kwun, which received overwhelming response with her immersive installation works, and also introduced her avant-garde creative concept to many Hong Kong audiences. In anticipation of the upcoming Art March, M+ has commissioned Pipilotti Rist to create a new site-specific mobile video work titled “Unwaveringly,” which will be exhibited on the M+ facade from March to May.

M+ stands tall amidst the Victoria Harbour skyline, surrounded by a diverse range of buildings. “Unwavering” is a site-specific moving image artwork created in response to the unique characteristics of M+’s facade. The artwork combines Pipilotti’s renowned vibrant color effects and the use of flexible and free-flowing camera movements, echoing the ever-changing face of Hong Kong.

The artist explores the concept of “hands” through different scales – from the size of a human body to skyscrapers – showcasing the dynamism of this city. The hands on the M+ facade shuttle between objects at different speeds, guiding the audience to revisit the historically significant designs and architecture of Hong Kong, while paying tribute to the many skilled hands that have created these architectural wonders or shaped the city’s skyline.

Pipilotti celebrates the city’s achievements with “Unchanging with Ease” and explores various flowing rhythms, which are similar to the traffic flow in our daily lives. The hand can be seen as an extension of human emotional states, a tool for realizing our creative ideas, and a medium for giving poetry to actions. For artists, the hand itself is a beautiful thing.

The artist said, “My work not only sees the hands as a body part used for work and creation; I also interpret them from a perspective of appreciation. Our hands are a beautiful extension of emotions, allowing us to communicate silently with other living beings.” “Unwavering” presents itself in a friendly manner, allowing the audience to understand the immense power, tenderness, and potential that their own hands possess.

The work is supported by Art Basel and UBS Group and will be exhibited on the M+ facade from March 18 to May 21, 2023, every evening from 7pm to 9pm, as well as on Saturdays and Sundays from May 22 to June 17, from 7pm to 9pm. Keep an eye out!
