3. Canadian photographer Greg Girardo captures the glory of 1980s Hong Kong: Exhibition “HK UNSEEN”

When you think of Hong Kong in the 1980s, what comes to mind? Neon lights between buildings, Cathay Pacific planes flying overhead, sailors’ bars in Wan Chai, stylish outfits of men and women on the streets, and more. These nostalgic scenes are now captured by Canadian photographer Greg Girard. Blue Lotus Gallery is about to hold the “HK UNSEEN” exhibition, bringing never-before-seen Hong Kong series to Greg Girard’s vast fan base!

At the age of 18, Girard, who was deeply attracted by the Hong Kong harbor captured by American photographer Eliot Elisofon in 1962, spent a year working and saving money just to visit this city. Later, he was enchanted by the Pearl of the Orient and made several return trips in the 1970s and 1980s, eventually officially moving here in 1982. Due to his love for the cultural fusion of East and West in Hong Kong, Girard immersed himself in photography after moving to Hong Kong, wandering through the different streets and alleys of the city in the 1980s, using his lens to document this bustling city.

During this period, Girard’s creations laid the foundation for his photography career, eventually leading him to become an internationally renowned photographic artist. These photos were taken before he became a professional photographer and have never been seen by the public before, making this exhibition even more meaningful. Walking through the bustling streets, what exactly attracted Girard to leave his hometown and come to live in the former Hong Kong? Visitors are welcome to explore the exhibition and revisit the old Hong Kong captured through the lens of the photographer.

Local artist Liang Luoxi’s latest silver coin creation: “Liang Luoxi Personal Art Exhibition”

Local artist Leung Lok Hei showcased a series of coin collage paintings at his solo exhibition two years ago, stunning viewers with the intricate landscape created using coins. Two years later, he once again presented his latest coin paintings to the audience, along with calligraphy works he has been creating since last year. Leung Lok Hei’s coin paintings use one-hao, two-hao, and one-dollar coins as materials. He darkens the coins with a chemical solution and then collages them to depict iconic Hong Kong landscapes. For him, using coins to create art has a special significance. Despite the rise of digital transactions replacing physical currency, he hopes to remind people of the value of tangible objects through his coin art. The themes of his paintings include familiar scenes such as the view of city skyscrapers from a window and everyday life snippets of riding minibuses, reflecting the artist’s personal connection and collective emotions towards the city.

In the new calligraphy series “Hong Kong Chinese Character Map,” he transforms characters into different shapes of street names, resembling a street map, reflecting the characteristic density of Hong Kong streets. The artist transforms some common objects in our daily lives into creations with local characteristics, also evoking our shared memories of this city. You are welcome to visit the exhibition and appreciate the cityscape under the artist’s unique vision!

Artist Zhuo Yourui’s abstract series paintings depict extremely beautiful flowing light and shadow: “Traces of Misty Clouds: Zhuo Yourui’s New Exhibition”

Zhuo Yorui has always been committed to interpreting abstract life phenomena, the traces of time, and the flowing light and shadow. The “Mist Series” and “Sky Series” exhibited this time are Zhuo Yorui’s works in the past two years. She first takes photos of the scenery, then projects the photo images onto the canvas, and then meticulously draws the details of lines and colors one by one, focusing on seeking and expressing that delicate and rigorous visual effect.

The appearance of the contaminated water stains in the work makes it more intriguing. Water stains can be floating light prints, adding a touch of poetry to the scenery; or water marks on translucent glass, giving viewers a new visual experience.

In the Mist series, Zhuoyou Rui depicts the volcanic landscape under the mist. The picture reflects the eternal beauty and disillusionment between heaven and earth, exuding a unique visual appeal. Her works are not noisy or grand scenes, but a kind of unique, quiet, low-key, and lonely elegance that gently diffuses in the mist. The artist hopes to capture the “features” of the momentary changes in nature, seize the moment of beauty, and discover the true meaning of beauty from seemingly ordinary things. Through the colors, lines, and shapes given by the painter to the picture, every ray of light in the sky can convey different emotions, arousing various thoughts in the viewers.

“Misty Clouds: Zhuoyou Rui’s New Works Exhibition”
Date: From now until November 12
Time: 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM
Location: New Art Wave Gallery (Room 201, 2/F, Tung Chi Building, 86-90 Wellington Street, Central, Hong Kong)
