The Hong Kong International Film Festival Association Cine Fan presents a series of commemorative events to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the legendary film master Fellini.

Founded by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS), the regular program “Cine Fan” returns after a six-month hiatus, this time focusing on one of the most talented and acclaimed film masters in history, Federico Fellini, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Hong Kong. A series of exciting programs titled “Federico Fellini 100” will be presented to commemorate Fellini’s centenary, taking audiences on a journey through the fantastical imagery and unique film language created by this legendary master.

Cine Fan has restored all twenty-four works of Fellini, presenting them on the big screen for film lovers to journey through the master’s world of intertwining fantasy and reality, immersing themselves in the bizarre and mysterious atmosphere. Among these films, Cine Fan highlights 4 works that have won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film: the repositioning of neorealism in “La Strada,” the mix of joy and sorrow, doubt and illusion in “Nights of Cabiria,” the surreal black and white comedy “8 1/2,” and the highly autobiographical “Amarcord.”

The retrospective exhibition also includes the Cannes Golden Palm Award-winning “La Dolce Vita” and “Roma”, the first co-directed feature film “A Variety of Colors”, the first color film “Juliet of the Spirits”, “Myth of Love” which contrasts history with the present, and the final work “The Voice of the Moon”, thus tracing the film trajectory of Master Fellini’s life.

In addition to exploring the world of Fellini through watching movies, Cine Fan also set up the “Fellini Dream Carnival” exhibition, showcasing exhibits and treasures related to the master provided by the Bologna Film Archives, allowing the public to delve deeper into his film aesthetics and feel his passion for cinema. The exhibition is divided into 3 parts: “Fellini at Work” / “Film and Reality”, “Fellini and Masina”, and “Art and Drawing”.

“The Fellini at Work” / “Film and Reality” will showcase Fellini’s creative process, original production outlines, and excerpts from films; “Fellini and Mastroianni” will reveal the close collaboration between Fellini and the Italian national treasure actor Marcello Mastroianni through on-set photos and behind-the-scenes work photos; “Art and Drawing” will display Fellini’s hand-drawn artworks and film posters, all of which are being exhibited for the first time in Hong Kong, making them extremely precious.

Fellini’s unique film aesthetics deeply influenced future generations, with some works by Coppola and Martin Scorsese showing a hint of the master’s style, and Cine Fan has also selected two related works. Coppola used “8 1/2” as a framework to create “La Dolce Vita,” in which fantasy and reality, stage and private life are stacked on top of each other. As for Martin Scorsese, inspired by “Raging Bull,” he filmed his most acclaimed masterpiece of his film career, “Mean Streets,” combining strong elements of brotherly love, religion, and life redemption, leaving a lasting impression.
