9th place: “The Platform” (starring: Ivan Massagué, Antonia San Juan, Zorion Eguileor)
A dystopian film from Spain, combining horror and science fiction elements, which won the Audience Award for Best Film at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness section last year. The story follows the male protagonist who wakes up to find himself in a bizarre multi-level prison, with another prisoner on the same level. A platform with food descends into the center of the cells at designated times each day, sending down leftovers from the upper level for the lower level prisoners to eat, forcing all prisoners to scramble for scraps within a limited time. Those on the upper levels waste food extravagantly, while those below face starvation, leading to life-and-death decisions.

“Bird Box” is an American post-apocalyptic thriller film, adapted from the novel of the same name by Josh Malerman in 2014.
