#MetGala2022 Red Carpet Review: From Sharp Tailoring to Style Shifts, Men’s Fashion Returns to Formal Tradition

On the first Monday of May, according to tradition, it is undoubtedly going to be packed with the grandeur of the Met Gala. The return of this major event in the fashion world, after a two-year hiatus due to the shadow of the pandemic, has been anticipated to be exceptionally dazzling even before its debut – and indeed, it is. This year’s theme, Gilded Glamour, has been set by the organizers. Even though not everyone in Hong Kong may be familiar with the Gilded Age of the 19th century, the literal meaning of the theme suggests a magnificent and splendid occasion akin to being gilded.

What are the men’s fashion outfits that appeared at this year’s Met Gala? For those who have been paying attention to the red carpet event, which celebrity’s look left the biggest impression? Let’s review it together today!

Ryan Reynolds (Ralph Lauren)

As one of this year’s chairmen, it is not excessive to introduce the elegant Ralph Lauren Purple Label custom Peak Lapel Tuxedo, which symbolizes nobility. I especially like the pocket watch chain and the OMEGA 18K Moonshine Speedmaster watch on his wrist.

Jared Leto (or Alessandro Michele?) (Gucci)

From ivory bouquet embroidery to double-breasted, Gucci Blondie bag to crystal metal hair clips, even the hair length is the same, this Gucci twin icon should be one of the most memorable looks for everyone, right?

Pete Davidson (Dior Men)

In the past, Pete Davidson always attended events alone, but now he has become the center of attention (the reason, everyone should know, right?), choosing to wear Dior Men’s Tailoring, putting away his playful style. Plus, his 1.9 meters height, not bad, really good.

Jack Harlow (GIVENCHY)

In my opinion, one of the brands that most appropriately interpreted the theme throughout the evening must be GIVENCHY. Although Matthew M. Williams only created evening gowns for Rosalía, Karlie Kloss, and others, the high-level craftsmanship fully embodies the atmosphere advocated by the theme and the brand’s harmonious craftsmanship. Even though there was only Jack Harlow in menswear, his shiny brown Boxy Fit suit also highlighted his personality as a new generation singer.

Sebastian Stan (Valentino)

When everyone thought only the senior actress Glenn Close and heiress Nicola Peltz Beckham next to creative director Pierpaolo could handle Valentino’s Pink PP series, the feeling still lingers. Sebastian Stan, who is reminiscent of grunge in “Pam & Tommy,” surprises with a total look in Pink PP.

Adrien Brody (THOM BROWNE)

I don’t know if you have noticed, but many guests at this year’s Met Gala wore THOM BROWNE’s clothing on the red carpet, both men and women, with some being elegant and others playful; among the many interpretations, I personally think Adrien Brody’s demonstration is simply textbook-level example.

Joe Jonas (Louis Vuitton)

The traditional “tuxedo” has always been paired with a black jacket and white shirt, but in Louis Vuitton’s eyes, Joe Jonas is set to interpret it on the red carpet in a version made of high-end lace fabric, instantly softening the traditional gentleman’s tough style and giving the look a touch of delicacy.

Riz Ahmed (4SDESIGNS)

When it comes to textbook-style interpretations, the workwear of British-Pakistani actor Riz Ahmed is also worth mentioning. Without the grandeur of a suit, he chooses to appear in this rougher style, inspired by the European immigrant laborers of the Gilded Age, “correctly” echoing the theme of the Met Gala – and by the way, reminding everyone present of the true origins and history of the Gilded Age.

Kodi Smit-McPhee (Bottega Veneta)

Unexpectedly, Kodi Smit-McPhee, a rising star in the fashion world with a non-traditionally handsome face, once again donned Bottega Veneta’s clothing. It is believed that in addition to paying tribute to the brand’s new creative director, Matthieu Blazy, he also wanted to show appreciation for the brand’s technology – the “denim jeans” he wore were made of real leather; at the same time, there is reason to believe that he is paying the highest respect to Gilded Age’s technological advancements.

Will Welch (Chrome Hearts)

Will Welch is the global editorial director of GQ and a regular attendee at various fashion events. Accustomed to wearing custom suits to the annual Met Gala, he wore a custom suit made by Richard Stark, the legendary founder and craftsman of Chrome Hearts, this year. From the suit, details, shoes, silverware, watch chains, and more, all are unique Chrome Hearts products.

As for the rest of the guests’ outfits, there are the following:

Jacob Elordi (Burberry)

Nyjah Huston (Vivienne Westwood), Dwyane Wade (Versace), Paapa Essiedu (Off-White)

Travis Barker (and Kourtney Kardashian) (THOM BROWNE)

Russell Westbrook (THOM BROWNE)

Anderson Paak (GUCCI)

Damson Idris (dunhill)

Stormzy (Burberry)

Future (BOSS), Gunna (THOM BROWNE), Questlove (Zegna)

Patrick Schwarzenegger (LANVIN), Finneas (GUCCI), Leslie Odom Jr. (FENDI)

And the following few seem to need improvement…..

Kid Cudi (KENZO), Bad Bunny (Burberry), Lenny Kravitz (Chrome Hearts)

This year has been better than last year, but this swaying, long-swinging feeling seems like something Kid Cudi has performed at other events; Bad Bunny: can only say, it’s interesting, but looking forward to seeing him in Marvel; finally, Lenny Kravitz, rough yet quite suitable for this “rock godfather”, but this time wearing this transparent printed robe from Chrome Hearts, it’s a strange feeling.

Shawn Mendes (Tommy Hilfiger)

I really can’t turn back, when I heard someone laugh and say that this musical genius is once again playing the Marvel character Dr. Strange…..
