Recently reported, the late fashion designer Virgil Abloh collaborated with the German automotive leader Mercedes Benz on a cross-border collaboration project named Project Maybach, releasing the second part of the project with a joint clothing series by the car manufacturer and Virgil Abloh’s own brand Off-WhiteTM. The next day, another surprise announcement was made, indicating the upcoming launch of another collaborative vehicle – the Maybach S-Class collaboration vehicle jointly created by both parties.
According to reports, Off-White™ founder Virgil Abloh and Mercedes-Benz Chief Design Officer Gorden Wagener have collaborated to create an all-electric Maybach model, as well as another collaborative new car based on the S-Class S680 model, as a follow-up to the former. Similarly, the S680 will also be a one-off model.
In terms of design, the custom Maybach S-Class by Virgil Abloh is quite similar to previous custom Maybach models. The exterior still features a dual-tone combination of deep obsidian black and sand colors, while the interior showcases a luxurious style. From the center console and car doors to the rear seats, high-quality Nappa leather is used throughout. Additionally, there are hand-painted window frames, high-pile floor mats that complement the exterior of the car, and unique Project Maybach logos embroidered around. Furthermore, it is reported that Virgil Abloh has collaborated with Mercedes-Benz’s team to develop a new version of the digital MBX user interface exclusively for Project Maybach, enhancing the personalized concept of this car.
Although the Maybach S-Class did not attend the exhibition earlier this year, as another model in the plan – and the first time two new cars have been launched simultaneously since the collaboration – the Maybach S-Class will be limited to 150 units, and owners can receive a special gift package after purchasing the new car; it is rumored that the gift package includes a themed car cover, two car keys and a carabiner, as well as a leather wooden box containing a 1/18 scale replica model of the Maybach S680, all of which are not for sale.
Finally, Mercede-Benz also revealed that Project Maybach has set them on a rather ideal new direction, so the car manufacturer plans to release the first batch of electric vehicle models centered around brand supporters in 2023, and intends to produce each component of all its new vehicles in the final stages in the direction of “recycling development” to establish a larger recycling concept.
