Since Kim Jones took over, Dior Men has attracted attention from the outside world, not only because of Kim Jones’ aesthetic vision and cultural background, but also because of his understanding of the brand and its founder, Mr. Christian Dior, which has laid a very important foundation under his leadership. Taking the time to carefully read the brand’s archives has become an important habit for Kim Jones to design each season; in the summer 2022 collection, Kim Jones has brought a new accessory series to Dior menswear, reshaping the brand’s another classic symbol CD Diamond into a brand new print today.
Dior Oblique may be a major “discovery” for Dior in recent years, overturning fashion shows, men’s and women’s collections, and customer markets. However, for Dior, which has revolutionary fashion elements in its brand DNA, the creative possibilities are endless. Although there is no specific basis, for Kim Jones, who is determined to bring new designs to the men’s wear sub-line – currently the accessory series, perhaps another source definitely has to be attributed to Mr. Marc Bohan, who has been in charge of Christian Dior (the brand’s original name) for nearly 30 years, longer than Mr. Christian Dior himself, and has made Christian Dior a cornerstone of French fashion.
Mr. Marc Bohan, who took office as the brand’s creative director in 1960, first introduced the CD Diamond motif in the women’s Miss Dior collection in 1974. This motif was heavily featured in blouses, knit jackets, pleated skirts, scarves, footwear in the SS74 and AW74 collections, and even in a second version in the SS75 collection the following year, applied to neckties and collars in the men’s collection. It wasn’t until 1976 that the third version of the CD Diamond design underwent a rather innovative geometric transformation. Over 20 years later, Kim Jones once again reshaped this motif, drawing inspiration from the evolved CD Diamond design from 1975 to 1976, including the addition of striped dark flowers in the SS76 version.
This reappears in the Summer 22 series. The brand’s design team first carefully reviewed the changes of CD Diamond from 1975 to 1976, decided on the new design, had the illustrator hand-draw the totem outline, and then began production in the brand’s workshop in Italy.
After many years, Dior unhesitatingly chose the most representative Dior Grey as the color of the cotton canvas, then translated into charming patterns on the cotton canvas certified by the Global Organic Textile Standards. The craftsmen then hand-pressed and silk-screen printed the canvas to create a unique CD Diamond three-dimensional embossed effect, allowing every weave and thread on the canvas to be clearly visible, showcasing Dior’s craftsmanship.
It is worth noting that the appearance of the CD Diamond totem not only reflects Mr. Marc Bohan’s design philosophy and his dynamic thinking, but more importantly, this totem also records the brand’s ups and downs from the passing of Mr. Christian Dior until Mr. Marc Bohan took over, witnessing the brand once again establishing its important position on the world fashion stage. However, for now, let’s keep it a secret, more details can be found in the follow-up reports of ZTYLEZ MAN.
Kim Jones launches a new CD Diamond accessory series, offering three color options: misty gray, deep black, and coffee brown. The collection will be available on the Saddle bag, Dior Hit the Road backpack, small leather goods, belts, and the classic Dior Lock briefcase, previously featuring the Diro Oblique pattern.
