Just as everyone is eagerly anticipating and predicting what special or commemorative editions the brand will bring, OMEGA is already prepared and has brought the latest release in the first week of the new year – the all-new 2022 Speedmaster watch.
Furthermore, the new watch is equipped with the 321 movement, and the all-new Speedmaster is crafted with Canopus Gold.
When it comes to the introduction of the Speedmaster, I believe everyone is more familiar with the 105.003 from 1965 or the 105.012 and 145.012 from 1969. Even with the origin of the Moonwatch name and the legendary NASA Apollo 11 mission, we gradually forget the true identity of the Speedmaster. In 2022, OMEGA decided to seize the opportunity to “set the record straight” for the Speedmaster family.
The new Speedmaster is a new work designed by OMEGA based on the original model CK2915-1 watch. In detail, the new model mentioned first features the “broad sword hands” that only the first generation Speedmaster had; the vintage-style black onyx dial is engraved with the elliptical “OMEGA” logo and omits the “Professional” wording that was added in the 4th generation Speedmaster for the first time; the bezel is engraved with a tachymeter scale, 70-degree diagonal dot scale, DON scale, and even the crown is adorned with the exclusive NAIAD symbol, a symbol of OMEGA’s waterproof system that only appeared in a few first-generation models; for collectors who view the Speedmaster as a collectible, they will surely be even more excited: because OMEGA has paired this 65th anniversary edition with a replica of the original 1957 watch box, adorned with a precious box with a texture similar to pear wood, truly worthy of being priceless.
However, in addition to being able to see OMEGA’s sincerity in the original design and the use of 18K Canopus Gold in the case, hands, hour markers, and hands of the three sub-dials, watch enthusiasts must know that the new work is equipped with the legendary 321 movement used in the original version, which was once adopted by giants such as Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin. What is used this time is the version specially reissued by OMEGA in 2019. The sapphire crystal on the dial is engraved with the OMEGA hippocampus pattern that has represented the Speedmaster series since 1957. The eyes are specially set with shimmering sapphires representing the 65th anniversary, and the back of the watch is also decorated with special engravings commemorating the anniversary series, greatly enhancing its collectible value.
Since the Speedmaster was introduced in 1957, there have been over 250 known and documented styles in history. Whether it is the inspirational story of designer Claude Baillod that created history, or the achievements that established the legendary status of Speedmaster influenced by the space and moon missions of that era, Speedmaster definitely has extraordinary value and influence in the history of watches.
