In addition to searching for delicious food, you can also visit the theater in Cheung Chau! Cheung Chau Theater, one of the oldest pre-war theaters in the local area, reopened its doors in 1997 and is now officially in business today!
After the revitalization, the Cheung Chau Theatre has become a multicultural park spanning over 38,000 square feet. It combines traditional activities and famous attractions of Cheung Chau with local art and culture, local films, and more. It offers four main themed spaces, including the Cheung Chau Cultural Hall, the Dumbbell Information Center, the 1931 Studio, and the Silver Screen Plaza.
“Cheung Chau Cultural Centre” offers a diverse range of study tour programs, such as the “Simulated Archaeological Sandbox Excavation” that allows you to experience the fun of discovering artifacts like an archaeologist, the “Fire Making Experience with Drilling Wood” that helps you understand the productivity of prehistoric humans, and the “Ping On Bun Workshop” that showcases the unique characteristics of Cheung Chau. In addition, the rooftop of the cultural centre features the “Cheung Po Tsai Observation Deck” inspired by the design of Cheung Po Tsai’s pirate ship. Apart from a 90-minute self-service beverage bar, you can also enjoy a panoramic view of the entire cinema site and the scenery of Cheung Chau Island!
“The Dumbbell Information Center” exhibits a number of hand-drawn illustrations and documentary records related to Cheung Chau or Cheung Chau theaters’ over a hundred years of history, such as equipment lists and famous calligraphy works, allowing the younger generation to understand the cultural value and stories behind these artifacts. As for the “1931 Film Studio,” it recreates real film shooting sets, props, etc. Visitors can step into the film shooting experience inside the museum’s “Flirting Scholar” and “Trivisa” film scenes, taking on the roles of directors or actors. The museum will even provide post-production editing for all actors, big and small.
There is also a “Silver Screen on the Green” outdoor projection screen set up on a 10,000 square foot lawn, providing a space for outdoor concerts or movie screenings for the public to enjoy. Inside the venue, there are also three food stalls designed in the shape of sailboats, where you can taste creative cocktails!
You can also download the “Island Gather” App, which includes different levels and missions to learn about the traditional features of Cheung Chau or the historical buildings and shops with a long history. Combine virtual and real-world interactions to explore Cheung Chau from a new perspective!
