Sai Kung Thousand Islands Lake Easy Hiking Route! Plus a special feature on a local handmade candle workshop in Sai Kung City.

by

Known as the “Thousand Island Lake of Sai Kung”, Tai Tan is a simple to moderate hiking route that offers views of the Sai Kung Inner Sea around Zhan Zhu Wan and Kau Sai Chau. The scenery of multiple small islands and the blue-green sea is perfect for taking photos!

Visitors can start their hike up Tai Tun Shan from the Sai Kung Country Park Visitor Centre in Pak Tam Chung. Follow the Pak Tam Chung Family Walk towards the summit of Tai Tun Shan. Google Maps provides a clear route to follow, and it takes about an hour to reach the mountaintop. The slope up the mountain is slightly steep, but beginners can manage it.

The 317-meter high altitude pillar at the mountaintop is a popular spot for taking photos with the backdrop of several small islands in the Sai Kung Inner Sea. Afterwards, you can head towards Tai Mong Tsai Old Village or Cheung Shan, both of which are clearly marked on Google Maps. Some parts of the route are shaded by trees, so it’s not completely exposed to the sun, but it’s still important to wear sunscreen and bring an ample water supply.

When you come to Sai Kung and want to plan a whole day itinerary, you can return to Sai Kung town, have a coffee. Local handmade candle shop Be Candle, opened in 2012, also has a candle workshop (HK$680/person). The two-hour workshop allows guests to mix their favorite scents, and those who participate in the workshop can enjoy a 10% discount on purchases in the store on the same day. Classes are available from Wednesday to Sunday, and if you are interested, you can learn more on the official IG or sign up on the website.
